p.1 #1 · Canon 400mm 2.8 IS II tripod vs mono-pod mount question.

Just got my Canon 400mm 2.8 IS II -- did anyone switch the attached tripod mount with the accompanying mono-pod mount? Canon says you should have them do the switch.

If you always use it on a monopod, you could switch to the included monopod foot but then it would be hard to carry the lens holding on it.
For me the best foot is not the Canon(s), but a third party with built-in dovetail mounting.
I use the RRS on the 400II. The same foot works on the 500II and 600II.

I also use the same RRS foot Fred does. It looks odd but it does everything I need it to do.

Looking at RRS now; the LCF-53: Foot for 400/500/600mm IS-II.

Yes, I only swapped it because I use a monopod and Wimberley tripod head. If I was solely using a monopod I wouldnt bother buying a 3rd party lens foot.

If anyone is interested in the original Canon monopod foot which has been introduced with MKII supertelephoto lenses, I have two that are still in their original pack unopened.

Each foot is $99 shipped to Canada/Cont USA.

The brand new lens is at Canon in Virginia getting a firmwear upgrade -- so the only rush is if I want them to do the switching. Sounds like with a hex-wrench and some LocTite there is no reason I couldn't make the switch myself, or use the Really Right Stuff mount. Having a hand-hold on the bigger Canon mount is what I am comfortable with -- like on my ancient 200mm 1.8 and 300mm.

Looking at RRS now; the LCF-53: Foot for 400/500/600mm IS-II. Is the ease of attachment the primary benefit, or do you fell the RRS set-up is more stable?

Ease of attachment was a factor for purchase. The other would be the balance of the lens with extender + 1-Series body attached.

The LCF-53 foot works really nicely with the RRS monopod head:

I feel safe to quickly lock/unlock the lens from the head without worrying too much. It's also very easy to dismount the lens from the head for handheld shooting.
