p.1 #1 · Optical Quality of 200/3.5 ED-IF AF?

I've dug up some opinions of the 200mm f/3.5 ED-IF AF (for the F3/AF) that seem to indicate that it is an excellent lens.

I'm looking for a 200mm that has excellent sharpness across the frame at f/4 or so for use with my D800 for landscape purposes.

I have the 200/4 AIS and it really runs out of steam on my D800
So does the 180/2.8 AF
I have both the 80-200 AFS and 70-200/2.8 VRII - both are just OK at 200mm, but are pretty large and much heavier.

Anyone have experience with this lens? I know it will not AF on my D800 (it has been reported that it will not harm the D800 if you mount it - it just won't AF which is fine).

I've found a couple for sale, but they seem to be quite expensive at $600 or so.

Thanks for any info!

John

John, I have had a hard time trying to find reviews on the internet, but at http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/specs.html#200
you can verify that an 8/6 elements optical design with 2ED elements ( ) included, supposedly would deliver a very good optical performance.

This is not properly a review, but anyway some interesting information:

JMO but if the 180 and 70-200 VR2 aren't up to your standards I doubt the 200 f/3.5 will be either.

Think that 70-200 VRII is a zoom, not a prime, and the 200 is far below 200mm at close range and even at infinity focus breathing occurs (~180-190mm).

The 180/2.8 ED AF is a prime, but just with one ED element, not 2 as the 200/3.5.
Would be great a comparison to see as this lens performs.

Buy it John and show us as it performs against the 200/4, 180/2.8 and the zooms at 200mm

And what do you base this on?

I've found two for sale, with one having a "make an offer" available. So I may do just that and see what happens.

I've never been impressed with the sharpness of my 180/2.8 ED-IF AF and photozone shows why:

Also, here is the 80-200AFS at 200mm

And 70-200VRII -

So, the 180 is about equal with the 80-200AFS - fairly sharp in the center, but much less so in the borders/edges. The 70-200AFS VRIi is significantly better off-center, but still not super even across the frame.

I'm looking for a lens like my 105/2.5 AIS that is very sharp and has even sharpness across the frame. Hence my potential interest in the 200/3.5.

I've never used the 200 f/3.5 myself, but "back in the day" I don't recall anyone who did thinking very highly of it, esp. compared to the 180. I think CA was the issue. Of course that was back in the film days. The 70-200 VR2 is pretty much the gold standard @200mm these days, unless you want a 200 f/2 VR. But if you get one I'd be very interested in how well it does.

John, another option could be the Apo-Telyt-R 3.4/180mm with the Leitax-Bayonet-ring for Nikon.
Rolf (rdst) posted a very impressive picture taken with this lens on a D800 over at the Leica-R-thread: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/895186/110#10688266

John, the lens is fairly compact and good copies with some signs of use can be picked up for a good price.
I have this lens with the Leitax-ring, but my experience with it is limited:

Apo-Telyt-R on a D700, cropped - sorry, I have no landscape-shots at hand...

I had the 180mm f/2.8 AI-s, together with the 200mm f/3.5, and I still have the 200mm f/3.5. I thought their performance was about equal. However, the 180mm f/2.8 AI-s felt like and looked like a huge hunk of jewelry on the end of my camera (gold ring and all). I was always worried about bumping that 72mm front lens element.

The 200mm f/3.5 is built like a tank, and it looks like a tank, though. Even has a piece of glass covering the exit pupil. And it does have 2 ED glass elements.

It's hard for me to comment on the image quality. Mine is sharp, but at 200mm, there are always out of focus areas. And, I've kind grown out of long lenses, moving to wider angle lenses, so it doesn't see too much use.
