p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon's 7D?

I'm thinking about running a 2nd smaller system of a Nikon body with a 200-400. Curious as to what you guys think is Nikon's closest body to the 7d. I know Nikon has nothing in a crop format with 18mp, which is fine. I'm really looking frame rate, build quality and higher ISO quality.

Nikon also has the D3200, which has a 24mp sensor and equivalent ISO performance to the D7000 (which is .4 stops better than the 7D). However, the FPS is 4, vs 8 of the 7D.

If you are worried about frame rate, then you might also be worried about buffer size. I don't currently have a D7000, and when I did it was never an issue personally, but some say that you'll probably hit it's limits often.

You might look at a D300 or the mythical D400 if it is ever announced. Build quality will be higher than a 7D and the D300 will do 8FPS with the grip in 12 bit mode (not sure about 14 bit).

I rarely use the burst rate - however, I want it in case I need it. Would be a very short burst.

Then I'd grab a d7000, so long as 6 fps is enough for you.

The D7000's only shortcoming is it's buffer and that it doesn't autofocus the best with teleconverters in place. If you don't plan on using teleconverters and can shoot peak action these become much less of an issue.

This was shot with a D7000 and 70-200VRII. (my apologies for the obtrusive watermark!)

ps...i had a D700 and 500VR in the boat with me but still decided to use the D7000.

Scott, That's not something I want to hear in reference to the TCs. My intent was to use this coupled with a 400 2.8 with and without TCs.

Can you elborate a little more on this issue?

With my bare 500VR and the D7000 AF is fast and snappy, much like my D700 is. With a 1.4 teleconverter in place the D700 and D3s i've used the AF reacts and slows a little bit, but still function quite well.
With the D7000 it seems to becomes lethargic, for lack of a better term. It just doesn't react or track as well as the D700 and D3s.

The D7000 may act quite differently on a 400 2.8 with twice as much light entering the camera. I have never used a 400 so can't comment on it's behavior with teleconverters.

Here's a little more info for you regarding the D7000 AF from someone else.

D7000..... I shoot with the D800/D7000 combo. Its killer! Agreed -- the buffer could be a bit more robust, but its a very capable camera.

I loved the handling of my 7D but I like the results from my D7000 a lot more. Used D7000's are the best value going in an SLR right now IMHO

I'm not saying that the D7000 is not a great camera as it most certainly is! However it just might not suit your needs.

Why not try and rent one and see how it will perform on your 400?

The D300s is the closest thing to the Canon 7D in body style/build, AF, and speed (7fps, 8 with grip). The only 2 things the D300s needs to keep up with the 7D is higher MP and better video. Other then that the D300s is a great camera.

Wish I never sold my 7D. It's a great body and with the new 2.0.0 update it's even better.
