p.1 #1 · Tough commute...

...and the water is the easy part. After four years of evading a variety of predators in the river (going down as fry and up as adults) and at sea (Orcas, sea lions etc.) these Coho Salmon have made it back to the middle reaches of the river where they hatched. Their predators are for the most part behind them...now they just have to fight their way up river to the spawning grounds. The action takes place in the Sol Duc river of Olympic National Park.

Thanks for looking.

2 Same image as a 48% crop to show a closer view of the cascades.

3 A different image, bringing the salmon's challenge into even closer view.

Nice photos. I can hear the roar of the cascades. The photos convey the wonder of how the fish can make that trip against all that water energy.

Indeed it is! It's amazing what these guys go through. You did a wonderful job demonstrating just how difficult their journey can be

I wonder if they knew that they were going to die they wouldn't just have a quickie in the ocean and enjoy their last moments. Nice shots and not a bear to be seen.
