Haven't posted in a while, but I figured the FM sports shooters would appreciate something a little different.

We've all seen baseball photos where dust gets kicked up or blows through the scene, creating interesting backgrounds, but I've never seen this element come into play: fog.

Tech specs:
Canon EOS-1D Mark II N + Canon 400mm f/2.8L IS
1/400 @ f/2.8; ISO 3200

EDIT: Disclamer: Keep in mind that this has been edited a bit more than I would normally do for any photojournalism. Besides denoising, cropping and slight levels and exposure correction, I digitally enhanced the effect of the breath condensation.

awesome shot! you shot this with the background blacked out? interesting there was no light in the outfield..? your 1d2 handled the noise pretty well.

Looking at the image, I am assuming this player IS the outfielder. If that is the case, there is plenty of light in the outfield and it drops off well beyond that.

The wall in center field is colored black, so between the light fall off and the wall, it creates a sweet backdrop. One of the reasons I got the 1DmkIIn is that despite being from around the same release time as the 30D I had been using, it looked a little better at ISO 3200.

You are correct, this is the outfielder (the center fielder to be presice). I have a shot of the of an infielder with the fog in the background, but it wasn't quite the same effect.

Eric: Well I do like action, but 1/400 and ISO 3200 with lights that cycle with the best of 50 year old indoor gyms don't always mix well, so thinking outside the box is a must.

Also, for anybody wondering why there was fog, this was about 11:00 p.m. at night during a 12-inning game that started at 8.
