Technically poor (horrid light, high wind, blah blah), but perhaps of some interest because the salamander isn't seen all that often...at least by me. Comments welcome; criticisms unnecessary on this one...I know how bad they are

1 picking up

2 awkward position

3 correcting position

4 gulp EDITED

A fine set despite your protestations. They don't all have to be wall hangers to be beautiful, interesting, or enjoyable.

Yeah, just horrid, I would hate to catch action like this..
The little guy even appears to be smiling in #2.

And you have the nerve to post these, a GBH and a smiling salamander is so common that I've never seen one. Would love to put my name into these. Its a very fine set.

Man, there ain't nuttin' you can do about the light and wind. But what you can control you have done famously! Focus and detail are superb, and exposure looks very good - on my monitor maybe the white neck is a teensy bit blown, but I wonder if you could pull some detail with pp? And a great and apparently rare story.

Nice job!

David

I keep my monitor pretty tightly calibrated and nothing was blown in the 255-255-255 sense, but #4 had highlights of 246-249-242 and that is too bright. I pulled those whites down 3% and reposted the image. Definitely better. Images 1 through 3 have nothing out of the 230s & I'm ok with those numbers in this setting. Really appreciate your feedback, David. Thanks for taking the time to write.

I agree, and I think most of the core FMers do, too. There are a lot of different welcome niches on this forum. At the extremes, some images are tops because of the fine photography, regardless of information content. Others are tops because of the informative natural history captured in the photo, even if some technical photographic quality was reduced by the circumstances. For me, the natural history content has priority (but I have learned a lot from the technical advice from FM commenters that have helped me get better natural history photos). In my opinion, these are nice shots and need no apologies.
