p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma 70-300 APO or Canon 50-250 IS II

Hi there,

I have a Canon 350D, and currently the Sigma 70-300 APO DG, but I mainly use old manual focus lenses, and if I do use the sigma it is likely in manual mode as the AF is just too slow and unreliable.

My question is if the Canon 50-250 IS II would perform any better in AF terms? and the overall quality of the lens, is it worth struggling through with the Sigma or would the Canon be the better choice? My budget for a lens would be the price I could sell my Sigma for (The canon can be got for £106 on ebay new, which in itself is a bit of a worry)

Just wondered if anyone has compared these lenses together, or any experiences with the Canon lens on the 350D

Thank you for your time!

i've never used either but i recall seeing complaints about the sigma 70-300 and some praise for the canon 50-250 can't really say much in detail, i think the 50-250 af is probably still slow but maybe better than the sigma af, tamron 70-300 vc is likely fastest focusing of the bunch (canon 70-300L has full on precise and very fast AF but it's very $$$$$)

I've used both and I can say that the Canon EF-S 50-250 IS is much better than the Sigma 70-300 in all respects. The Sigma is OK up to about 200mm, and beyond that it's dreadful. The Canon is sharp at all focal lengths, has faster and more accurate auto-focus, and has image stabilization on top of that. If you're on a budget, this is by far the best bang for your buck.

I agree, the Canon 55-250IS has excellent resolution and the AF is good, a real bargain when it's on sale for $150
