Sigma goes too soft @ the long end for my taste.

Minimum-focusing distance of the 100-400 comes in handy:

Is that first shot an eagle attacking a bear for its fish?

Ugh.. I saw it on my phone and I saw an eagle attacking a bear which had a fish trying to escape the bear's mouth: Much better my way

The 100-400 is miles ahead of the sigma. Don't get fooled by the 100mm extra argument or the 500 dollars less argument. The 100-400 is a good lens. I have used it many times for filming, where zooming is required. You will love it.

+1

Sigma's best long zooms are the 120-300/2.8 and the 100-300/4 (I have the latter). In my quest for longer glass, I had hopes for the 150-500 ... but it's just not in the league of the 100-400L, not really even close, imo. As a consumer glass, it's okay. As a top performing AF long zoom, I've yet to find one to best the 100-400L (EF mount) even though I I've opted for the Sigma 100-300/4 and my 120-600 Vivitar (manual focus).

this is from an old crappy UT date code (because i read on the internet, older 100-400's aren't as good as newer date codes), and i have even dropped the lens on pavement.

1dx + 100-400 (180mm) @ 6400 ISO:

honestly, i would've purchased a used one, use your credit card w/ paypal and you are pretty safe if something is actually wrong w/ the lens, but then i would've saved the rest for something else.

not a heavy crop, when the bear finished running it was less than ten feet from me, i dunno how far at this point in the frame, they move pretty fast.

And for protection ...

I got a bit nervous with a Black Bear @ 50 feet. I can't imagine this one @ 10 feet.

Amazing photo
I agree, I should have bought used but I kept going back and forth between new and used. I bought new because of the 30 day return policy.

An alternative nobody mentioned is the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L . It's sharper than the 100-400 and cheaper. Sure it's non-IS but IS is much overrated for bird shooting.

How can a prime be an alternative for a zoom

I went for the prime because I tried a 100-400l and always shot it at 400. I have a 70-200 though so dont miss that range.

The prime is lighter and seems quicker to focus, centre sharpness is similar, edge is better, bokeh is better. It lacks even the basic IS though and has a huge MFD.
