p.1 #1 · D800 self portrait / timer tricks ?

I loved my fuji X100 because it would focus AFTER the timer was over, so it was very very easy to do self portraits at large aperture where pre-focusing would otherwise almost always ends up with soft images

I was wondering is there was a trick to do that with my D800E ?

Use a wireless remote release.
The D800 will focus when you depress the shutter release then start timing.

I'm afraid the reponse by Dennis H. misses the point of your query.

The DESIRED CAMERA FUNCTION in this matter is to auto-focus immediately before the camera trips the shutter. NOT when you start the self-timer countdown with the remote switch.

sorry, nikon doesn't support that. the options are use a remote shutter release so the OP can you focus on themselves or hire somebody to take the photo, as people that sit around taking photos of themselves probably don't have any friends.

Another possibility is to setup focus-follow mode (it has a new name now) and creep towards the camera until it fires.

If you don't have a wireless remote you can use the interval timer function. Check the manual. On the D3s and other bodies back to the D300 the camera will focus before each shot. (Single shot mode). I don't have the D800 but assume it would function the same.
