Photographing bees in flight is one of the most difficult subjects to capture. To get this shots I used a Canon 5Dmk3 and the 180 Canon macro. Is it better to use a flash to get even light and freeze action ? What flash setting is the best? On my 580 EX ll , there's a high speed sync. but I don't know if this is what I should be using. Some feedback and comments on the subject will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jay

Hello Jay, bravo for desire to shot bees in flight
Looking down my post bees and bee dance ..
If you have dayly light, you must have close-up 1/1000 and more, because bee work on 800 Hz.
If you want photo with flash, 1/250 will be ok, because flash freeze action.

Lovely series.
As commented above either use highish shutter speeds in natural light or use flash with the camera in manual set something like 1/200th F11 ISO100-200 with the flash in ettl mode.
No need for high speed sync as the effective shutter speed is the flash duration
