Wondering if anyone has tried the AquaTech collapsible lens hoods on Canon 400mm or 600 mm lenses? Pluses and minuses?

use it on my 300 most of the time. takes a little getting used to and setting up

Use it all the time for traveling (airlines) on my 500 f4. Saves lots of room and works fine on lens.

Have you considered a Don Zeck cap? I use them for 500/4L IS and 200/1.8L lenses. They're a favourite on the Canon forum (and maybe elsewhere, too). Search for 'zeck' to read about them on the Canon forum.

that has little to do with a hood though. but Zecks caps are excellent.

MOst of the time, I use a Zeck instead of a hood.

I use an Aquatech collapsible hood on an 800mm - as others mentioned, the storage space while traveling is great - put the big lens in a backpack as a carry-on in the plane, and stick the Aquatech in the luggage.

The Aquatech weighs about the same as a "real" hood - no significant weight savings there.

If it gets wet, the Aquatech weighs more than the "real" lens hood - and takes a day or two to dry out.

You can stand your tele lens up on the Aquatech - it is sturdy and will hold the load with no problem (but it tends to give others pre-heart failure).

Looks nice, durable - I'd say for travel where space is limited, the Aquatech hood gives you options...an expensive but worthwhile investment.

well not as expensive as replacing the original. nowhere near it at a $280 replacement cost. takes quite a beating too.

must get some real interesting images using the zeck cap. just like at the olympics
