p.1 #1 · Carrie and kids first FPJ attempt

Spent some time with my friend Carrie and her lovely children Ty and Hailey while at the park (and celebratory pie).

Would love any feedback. All shot on a 5dII with the 85 1.8 (except the last 2 shots)

Hard to give feedback not knowing what your goal was. Just a fun afternoon in the park and around town? I'd say some great candids. Something for your portfolio? I'd say a few have potential, but most don't belong.

Also, If you want feedback on individual photos try picking 3-5 per post and leaving it at that. You can also link to a full album if you feel the need. No one is going to give you individual CC on 24 photos.

I probably have a different perspective than the last poster, but I much prefer candids to more traditional portraiture. However, this is a personal bias and let me qualify my critique by stating that I'm not a pro or a particularly good photographer. Despite liking your approach (and perhaps not being qualified to do so), I'm going to give you a fairly harsh critique because I feel with some minor changes this set would be a lot stronger.
I would be fine with more than 5 photos, but feel this set could be significantly culled. There are 5 or 6 inverted shots, and that minimizes the impact of a novel perspective.
I would really like 2 if the girl on the right was a member of the family.
If you took a step to the left, I would like 3 a lot more.
Stop down another stop or two on 9 to have mother and son both in focus
11-14 each feel slightly off regarding timing or angle
A lot of the hide and seek are difficult to find the subject and/or very centrally composed
22 and 23 are really nice moments
24 is a good conclusion to a fun day
Sorry if that was overly harsh, and please know I enjoyed the set.

Thank you to both you guys, harsh criticism challenges some one to move forward, coddling doesn't do much. These are also the same reasons I'll never have kids of my own...that and poop.

Hi

The playground shots are ok. As said before, a lot of repeats. Also, in quite a few, their faces are obscured. This works sometimes, say in #2 but not #3. However, the composition in #3 is a lot stronger.

I like #9 but the boys face bring OOF spoils it slightly. I'm not sure why it's OOF as he appears to be in the same focal plane as his mother?

I don't really feel any involvement in the hide and seek ones. I've been advised before to get involved in the action and I think that would have helped here

As a general observation on the set, the colours, exposures, and b&w conversion are all great. Quite a few could do with their verticals correcting and keep an eye on stray limbs etc dangling on the edges of the photos

This is all just my uneducated opinion, so take it all with a pinch of salt

Adam
