Hi ... I'm new here. I've read the archived post on 430EX II repair costs but here's a new one I'll bet..

Without thinking about what would happen I put my camera and flash still attached inside a display cabinet ust a little too close to a very hot lamp. Now the flash head is partially melted and deformed, the wide panel assembly won’t pull out and the motor/slider for the wide-tele doesn’t move and is locked now at Manual 14mm.

Is this unit “fried” It would need an entire head assembly minus the flash … flash still works by the way and turns/tilts.

"fried" means the electronics of the flash are died and nothing really works. Seems that you still have usable unit. Just use it within what you have at this point. I rather have it sit at it's widest rather than the longest setting. You can also duplicate what the slide out diffuser can do with a Stofen or similar.

I can't imagine the cost of replacing the head is something worth doing.

yep guess you're right. Got the same advice from Bill Gray at US Camera.
Its just that I feel so dumb for doing something ... well ... so dumb.

Took a few shots today with IR triggered off camera ... working OK and its wide open with a home-made sto-fen like diffuser.

thanks
