Sir DavidWEGS posted about a themed thread(s) where people could see different types of portraits/lighting and how they were put together (not sure if I really am interpreting his post correctly, but I'm going with this). So, this is an open thread with a theme of 3 light sources (the sun could be one, as well as artificial light). Post your image made with 3 (no more, no less) lights, and add a little bit about placement, environment, and maybe some goals/thought processes that went into making the image. Who knows, maybe we can all actually learn and be inspired by each other on FM instead of talking about good, bad, or no critiques, lol. This could also turn into a series with other themes (natural light, continuous light only, gelled lights, etc.) Let's see where it goes.

Me first!

This is Natalie, after the sun had gone down. We lost all of our light rather quickly, there wasn't really a twilight period. We still wanted to shoot though, as she'd just changed into this red dress. I had trouble focusing with just a touch of light from the nearby streetlamps, though, so good old live view to the rescue. I placed one bare flash on the fountain ledge behind her cam R as an accent, another cam R in front thru umbrella, and another in an umbrella cam L a little bit further away. I brought back a little bit of the trees in the bkg in post to give it some more environment and not have it go pitch black, but otherwise this is very much how it looked OOC.

Your turn!

Awesome shot! I have exactly ZERO three light portraits, but as I'm just dipping my toe in the water of using flashes and strobes, this will be an interesting one for me to watch and learn from. Thanks for starting it!

Nice shot J, Sorry I haven't commented on your posts lately, life has been busy!

Dig the shot as usual you push the lighting in all your shots. Something I admire. The only thing I would comment on is the temp of the lights you used. Its nicely done and man you get balance well on the subject! Given the dark setting, I would maybe have gelled the lights to maybe warm it up and tone down the white in the light. I hope that made sense.

Here is my shot.

3 light shot
Sun behind for rim and back lighting
one gelled speedlight camera left just above the subject pointing down
one gelled speedlight low camera right to help fill shadow and give some separation.

I was trying to achieve a lighter almost hazy feeling to compliment the setting sun, with minimal flare from the sun. Add his pose and the expression I was going for the "in thought" feel.

Love these kinda threads, can be very helpful and get to see a lot of sweet strobed photos

Ill take a shot at it.

Shot this for a client, 3 lights, big softbox camera left (ab800 at about 1/16)
Ab400 cam right with a grid hitting the back of the sheets/base board to expose them a little more
Speedlite cam left (hair light at around 1/4)

Nice shots folks, I'll get up the courage to try with a shot from a recent workshop.

This shot has two strip gridded softboxes behind L&R for rim and separation, a large softbox camera right and a white reflector camera left for fill... (depends if you call the reflector a light I guess..)

Great shots everyone. I particularly like the one posted by TiSE.

Here are a couple from me. Both the same setup - 550 EX on the left, 430 EX II on the right, no modifiers. 22 inch beauty dish top center, diffused with sock.

I've posted these before. Probably obvious we were going for a Joel Grimes style shot, and both images are composites with the backgrounds shot separately. The lighting was fun to play with and we were pretty happy with the results (my son and me in the shots).

Nice shots, thank you all.
Here is my picture. The location was a small corridor between two old houses. I used:
- natural light as the rim light, coming from the right of the model
- one reflector on a stand with a holder in front of the model and
- on camera gelled flash pointed to the ceiling in an angle to get some sculpting and warm color to the face

I had no assistant and it took quite some time to adjust the reflector to the right place an angle to get what I wanted.
I hope that you understand my English and like the picture too

Great idea for a thread. I have some three-light setups from a recent studio session that I will try to add when I get a chance.

Here's a three light portrait of folk singer Sam Hinton in a studio in San Diego about ten years ago. Most of my shots are either one light or more than three, but the ones with more almost never look like it.

Have you noticed that everyone else's 3 light shots define and enhance the form? Did notice the yours totaly flattens the form? What's with the terrible shadow under her jaw line? Good lighting is about defining the form, not just getting enough light to expose the image.

What I've noticed is that every couple of weeks, I can look forward to more of your sage wisdom, which seems to be incredibly focused on me and my photography. I honestly have no idea why you've chosen to hound me, and I don't find it threatening at all, but I do think it a bit strange. Ah well, carry on...

EDIT: Yes, actually I did notice that my lights were set at about the same power so that there were less shadows than I would prefer. Sadly, I'm not perfect, and I suppose you'll just have to suffer through that 'terrible' shadow under her jaw.
