p.1 #1 · Canada Jim Redux - aka Pika Pic

Took this Pika image this morning as the sun was coming up over a nearby ridge. The critter did me the favor of sitting out on a rock where the sun could hit it from behind (relative to me) but the BG was still mostly in shade. Hand held with a 7D & 400 f5.6. ISO 400, 1/1600, f 5.6 at 11.5 metres. A bit of a crop to eliminate a hot spot.

I find these types of shots hard to deal with in Photoshop as that SW seems to want to make everything middle grey (like it is designed to do) and muddles the color etc as a result.

Any comments would be most appreciated.

Ken

Ken- I think the image is spectacular!
But I also see the "muddle."
In fact, although I almost always have muddling in my slide scans, I'm surprised at how many posted digital shots have the same problem. 80% of the time that I edit muddled shots by applying "auto color," the muddling is removed.
I did that with your image: 100% auto color. And also 100% sharpness. Both are sliders, so it's a subjective thing.
Here's what I got with those two very speedy adjustments on Photoshop.

I do like the rim lighting on him Ken. A dash of fill flash might have helped this one. I like how the shot demonstrates how small he is compared to his world, the rock pile.

I like the original and the post adjustment shot. Guess it depends on the eye of the photographer as to which "performance" he is trying to attain.

Well, to lighten the subject further would detract from the backlit effect so it's a fine line to walk Ken. I think you did a fine job and given the time of day you made the image, it presents well

Thank you Charlie. I like it too. Auto color by Camera Raw leaves me with a very cool image, but in a cool way color-wise only. Very blue. Starting with the jpg may have made the outcome closer to what I came with than what PS comes up with. Thanks for making the suggestions. Always appreciated.
