Something that you could just sit on the grass or sand without bringing a light-stand. I saw a video by ben shirk where he was using something that looked a little similar to lastolyte but it had a built in column that you could use to stand it on its own without a light stand.

is this what you have in mind? The Turf Stand is a light stand without legs; instead it has a four-tined fork that you push into the turf/sand/ground or whatever, and it holds up your reflector

no, i have not seen the turf-stand but the stand i'm looking for has a thin, umbrella style arm connected to the frame which fits into a universal joint stand adapter or can be leaned back against the arm on the ground

Yep, they fold up like an umbrella. The spokes are pretty strong, even possible to reshape them in case of accidentally bending.

I've got Reflectasols that are thirty years old, used nearly daily. The fabric is interchangeable, reversable, and dry-cleanable. They fold more compactly than anything and collapse without requiring feats of prestidigitation.

Note, however, that simply standing them up outdoors requires zero wind.

i assume you can sand bag them or maybe that doesn't work unless the column is anchored somehow? Does anyone make anything similar but cheaper?

I've used a weight and some bungee cord to hold down my Reflectasol Square for outdoor use. It works great.

"Cheap" usually brings a host of problems with it. Better, I think, to do without while saving for the right stuff.

As mentioned above, Larsen products are tough and reliable, and will stand the test of time.

BTW, speaking of Lastolite: they have a product -- the UpLite -- that uses the twist-to-fold-style reflectors along with a self-supporting arm that's made to sit on the ground. You can just put a camera bag or other object(s) on it to hold it down in a light breeze.
