p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 400mm Portraits - Natural light

I was lucky enough to pick up a mint 400 2.8 IS II last Monday

Ever since my downtime has managed to combine with the weather being pretty patchy.

Desparate to try out the lens, I roped my oldest in for a couple of practice shots

Lit by window light

Crit is welcomed

Cheers

Adam

edit: Forgot to add, these are framed in camera (i.e. not cropped), and shot wide open, naturally...

Would like to see a little pop of flash to bring out these eyes, but that is personal preference. #2 has more dimension IMO. These photos made me smile, great shots and thanks for sharing.

Very nice, Adam. So I have to ask, at 400mm, where you outside the window or is your house just that ginormous? :-)

^ exactly. I'd have to stand at the neighbors (not your place David). Fun to see different lenses used for portraiture.

I like # 2. He has a nice relaxed expression. I bet its hard to get a connection with the subject from so far away, so kudo to you!

Thanks guys. Yes, I was outside and the subject was inside

I'm guessing I was about 4 or 5m away and the door was about halfway! (exif says 390/100 for subject distance - what does that translate to?)

I think I prefer #2 - just has a bit more to it. I really like the look of these, a nice dreamy feel. I'm sure it will get used for some portraits in the future

Great shot. I have the Nikon version which seems slightly sharper 😉.

Did you shoot this from your neighbor's house?

Very nice. I'd like to personally strongly disagree with the "pop of flash" comment. Even with a large soft box or something, flash highlights in the eyes often ruin a natural light portrait for me. They virtually always look artificial - thus detracting from a natural portrait.

I agree that a 'pop of flash' could potentially cause the photo to look artificial. Perhaps a reflector to add more light on the eyes is a way to go if one deems necessary? (for me the photo is fine.)

Thanks again guys. Weather is still dreary. So might have to do some more portraits this week. I might try a reflector. I did consciously refrain from trying to lift the eyes in post.

Uncool man... I was happy and now I am lusting for a 400mm 2.8 myself. Congrats
