p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Taming a Southern hawker ?

Suspect the same Southern hawker dragonfly I'd seen before visited the garden yesterday, I watched it hunting for a while and it eventually hung up in a dried Euphorbia flowerhead. Rather fedup with the uninspiring background I decided to try and persuade the dragon to get onto my finger. Managed it but it took off again before I could take any photos. Repeated this process again, got it onto my finger again and it stayed there long enough for some photos before taking off again for a hunt. It actually came back again and hung up in the same plant whilst chewing on a ladybird.

Yes, Aeshna cyanea the Southern Hawker male.

That three-celled triangle at the base of the hind wing (male), together with the dorsal abdominal and face patterning are diagnostic.

p.1 #10 · p.1 #10 · Taming a Southern hawker ?

Yesterday I had a couple of brief encounters with a female (same scheme but green markings instead of blue ones) of this species at the brook along the bottom of my garden.

Having previously seen it, I walked down to see if it was around (not taking my camera). It was hovering just where I would have stepped to enter the stream. It then rose to about my knee level and gave me a long checkout at close quarters. Later in the day, I was a few paces upstream and she gave me another looking over, hovering within reach of my right hand which was at my side. This time I had my camera but I didn't want to startle her by moving it around. Unfortunately, she did not settle nearby. We had only those few minutes of sunshine on a dull and breezey day. I know where to find her on the next sunny day!

Excellent set Brian!

I've done the same with a few species down here -seems like they stop viewing you as a threat after a while.

Fun series, Brian! Itīs really great when you can examine them so close.

I have got similar experiences often with Ophiogomphus cecilia, they are perching on top of the head, hand, camera, tripod legs, shoulders, you name it... always fun...

I was once watching an A. grandis patrolling. Every time he flew in front of me he slowed and looked like he was checking whatīs that. After couple of passes he decided that would be great perching place and landed on my upper lip...

By the way, Aeshna caerulea = Azure Hawker. The one here is Aeshna cyanea which is as you mentioned Southern Hawker. Azure Hawker is so different and itīs habitats are bogs, definitely not gardens

Quite correct. I intended to write cyanea, and concentrated so hard on not writing caerulea that the inevitable happened.

Now corrected
