Most important question - do you still have the box? Possibly worth more than the lens.

You don't get to insure things in the rental business, unfortunately.

There is, however, some good news, I'm now told: we've located a 50mm f/1.0 that has good glass, but it's electronics burned out (and they aren't made anymore) so hopefully we'll be able to make one live one out of those two.

A little in-body AF tune adjustment will bring that lens right back up to spec.

You gotta tell us the story behind this, as in how the renter (or worse, employee?) damaged the lens.

It was a renter: mounted it in front of a video camera, if I understand correctly, and the whole thing toppled forward. Being a video guy, he was happy to inform us that our lens had protected his camera in the fall so they were still able to get their footage with another lens

If it had been an employee I suspect they'd have taken the evidence with them when they disappeared in the middle of the day. But for people who sometimes ask "Why do you have padded carpet in a warehouse", well, here's the answer.

None. We don't do security deposits. The renter (like almost all of us) is a standup guy. We'll work out some payments when we figure out what the cost is. He'll actually be OK since we should be able to create a new one in house for the cost of the broken one.

I work as a unit stills photographer in films and have seen very expensive gear get damaged but never a lens like that. wow
