Hey everyone, just wanted to throw this out there; has anyone used the Tamron SP AF 300mm f 2.8 and if so what was the quality of the pictures like? Any handling or compatibility issues?

Thanks for any insight.

I use to own this lens in a Nikon mount years ago. In fact, I wrote a review for it that has been a part of photo.net since 1998. You can read it here: http://photo.net/learn/nature/tam300

Anyway, the Tamron lens is a great bargain, but definitely shows its age. I found that it exhibits about of chromatic aberration when shot wide open by backlit subjects and works best with the Tamron SP 1.4x.

The tamron lens is really well made and has a rather clever clutch system when used with EOS bodies.
cheers,
bruce

I'm not sure if this is true, but I've read that the Tokina ATX 300 f/2.8 is the best of the third party 300's and actually has snappy AF. They were a bargain and even new were like $2300 just a few years ago. The other option is a Sigma 120-300 f/2.8, reportedly a better lens than their prime and more versatile but heavier. Now comes with OS and new they are around $3300 but the non OS versions are much cheaper now.

Copy and paste from this thread.

I owned the Tokina back when I was on Canon and now I own a Tamron 300 2.8. I've had good experiences with both. I rarely need that much reach, so I couldn't justify the fatty Canon/Nikon versions, and so far I haven't felt the need to upgrade.

They're both decently sharp wide open (with the Tokina perhaps being a hair sharper). Don't expect "L" level quality out of them, but I have no issues getting usable shots for paid work wide open. Stop either down to 3.5 or 4 and they become very sharp. AF tracking is largely dependent on the camera. With a 1D mkII you should be fine. They're accurate, but a bit slow. Even so, I haven't really had any issues using them for sports. The Tokina is built like a TANK. Solid, super heavy, very cool. The Tamron feels all rubbery and not quite as tank-like, but still solid.

Did someone here buy the Tamron 300mm f2.8 copy that was on eBay for $850? I just got my deposit today and was about to go get it, and it was already sold Looking forward to seeing results with it though!

Thanks for the insight and suggestions everyone; going to keep my eyes open for a used Tamron or Tokina and hopefully get some photos posted.

Sorry to beat you to it! I watched it for a long time and read lots of reviews (including this one) before purchasing. I'll let you know how it goes when it comes in!

Haha I did the exact same thing. Definitely looked like a good catch though, I'll be keeping my eye out for more in the near future. In the meantime, decided to upgrade my Sigma 15-30 to the Canon 16-35mm f2.8.

So I've got the Tamron 300 2.8 now. I'm currently loving it. Surprisingly fast focus though it does emit a somewhat pleasant whir and not the clunky motor sound found in Canon's micromotor USM or non USM lenses. I do certainly see some chroma at f2.8 but at f4 it's a fine pice of machinery. I will say it is a little softer than my 70-200 2.8L but part of that is getting used to the razor thin DOF. It is quite the heavy lens and I do not have a monopod/tripod for it yet so everything's been handheld. First daytime football game is Saturday so that's where it will really shine or not! It did fairly well in a highschool stadium despite having to bump ISO to 10,000. Will update again soon!

Hope to see your results from the high school game. And ugh, hate lighting at HS football games. I usually shoot major college or pro sports so get spoiled by the light (like, iso 2000, 1/640 and 2.8). Do you have a 1.4x extender or are planning on getting one? Interested in results with that too. 420mm f4 sounds like a formidable combination (after all, the 400 f4 DO is like, $4000+), and might go well with a 70-200.
