p.1 #5 · Tamron SP AF 300mm f 2.8 with Canon 1DIII | |
Copy and paste from this thread.
I owned the Tokina back when I was on Canon and now I own a Tamron 300 2.8. I've had good experiences with both. I rarely need that much reach, so I couldn't justify the fatty Canon/Nikon versions, and so far I haven't felt the need to upgrade.
They're both decently sharp wide open (with the Tokina perhaps being a hair sharper). Don't expect "L" level quality out of them, but I have no issues getting usable shots for paid work wide open. Stop either down to 3.5 or 4 and they become very sharp. AF tracking is largely dependent on the camera. With a 1D mkII you should be fine. They're accurate, but a bit slow. Even so, I haven't really had any issues using them for sports. The Tokina is built like a TANK. Solid, super heavy, very cool. The Tamron feels all rubbery and not quite as tank-like, but still solid.
