... conditions are?

I just checked "lensrentals" conditions and found out that the 4day fee for an (e.g.) EF 70-300 4.0-5.6 L IS USM is about $54,75. WOW! Here in germany I have to pay $ 148 for the same item and time periode at a well known dealer/rental. Without insurance and I have to pay a deposit of additional $ 1723 (what I get back if I bring back the lens without damage - else they will keep the caution).

Same with cameras! Hell! If I would live in the united states, I would stay with my two favorite lenses and would purchase a new one not without having rented it first and find out that the renting costs for my needs in a year would overcome the purchase. I wish, they (or I could find a company here) would offer their service here in germany with comparabel rates.

If I visit the united states next time I guess I will lett all lenses (except one) at home and rent instead.

Ralph

I prefer to buy a lens on the B&S board. Most times I can use a lens for weeks or months for just the cost of postage.

Ralphie, I like the way you translate German "kaution" into English "caution".

Same in the UK Ralph!...I mean, for a 24-70 rental, looking at ~45 for the day. Fine for a day trip, but if you want it for say 7days+, it gets expensive.

So, I tend to rent for 24hrs and see what I think of a lens, then buy it used

I like that you like that, Peter. But I WOULD LOVE you to correct me, too. Even having an english (welsh, irish) name does not make english my mothers language.
Is "security deposit" working?

Ralph

"Deposit" works or "Security Deposit"

This might work well for f/4 and slower lenses, but what do you do with fast lenses for example which are not mircrofocus-adjusted? Relying on MF?

Thank you, 888. I changed it.

One day for a lens might be enough. It is not for a new body like 5D III to find out if I feel comfortable with it.

Why ? I think your English is excellent, in fact, I can understand it better than Rob Lynn's.

My body is calibrated by Canon. I guess a company like LR is calibrating their lenses regulary.
If that is not fitting I would do same what I would do with a purchased one. First I would try to adjust it. If that is not working, I would return a rented lense (or let calibrate a purchased one).

I would not rent a lens longer than 300mm or faster than 2.8 for holliday.
