p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · C/Y on 5D?

I have a 35-70 and a 50mm f/1.7, and I'm thinking of upgrading to the 5D. I know that certain lenses can interfere with the mirror on 5D's. Is there a reversible solution for this? The only possible solutions I've seen is to grind the mirror down or to grind down one of the little nubs on the c/y mount.

Go for the nubs on the mount ... the previous owner of my 35-70 had already done it when I got mine. Kinda nice to not have to worry about it when I got it. I'm pretty sure that most people who would even be wanting a C/Y mount is going to be in the Canon camp, so they'd probably prefer to NOT shave their mirror and as such appreciate to need to take a little off the mount.

On my Nikon 20/2.8 AIS ... I just removed the shield rather than grind on it as it was quite a bit of interference. That of course, is reversible (i.e. re-install). Not sure @ the C/Y though.

With C/Y lenses that require a modification to get them to clear the 5D mirror the modification is never reversible (unless you use a Leitax mount), but I think it never impairs the functionality of the lens (it would still work on Contax/Yashica cameras).
I had to shave 1 or 2mm off the rear "fin" on my Contax 100/2.8 Makro-Planar to get it to mount on my 5D -- the fin was pressing against the mirror box.

I modded a 50mm 1.7 to use on my 5D, all it took was a file and a sharp knife. I thinned down the plastic ring on the back of the lensmount, and filed down the metal fin that adjusted the aperture. It's not reversible, but I figure I won't be selling the lens anyway. If I do, I'll just have to sell it to another Canon shooter, which shouldn't be too hard. It's a pretty fantastic lens. I'd strongly recommend getting an adapter with a focus confirm chip, I've been regretting not doing that since day one.

You can check this place out
http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_db.html

According to that there should be no problems w 35-70.

The 50/1.7 is denoted "IFFY", check it out. You'll also find useful info on adapters and Leitax. I have several CY's called iffy for the 5D2 and the only one with (minor) problems is the50/1.4. It (sometimes) stays wideopen with the adapters I am using. The plan is to eventually Leitax all mine (35/1.4, 50/1.4, 85/1.4, 100/2 & 28-85) but havent bothered yet ..

I've had a copy of that lens which did hang the mirror, so you can't totally rely on that list. The 50/1.4 and the 28/2.8 are listed as iffy for the 5D but they both didn't need modifications for my 5D.

My 50/1.4 and 28/2.8 clear my 5D fine as well.

It really depends on the camera. There are 5D's that have problems, there are that have not. I have a 2 year old 5D MKII and 13 Contax C/Y lenses and none of them hang on the mirror.
Apparently there is some difference in placing the mirror. Maybe the manufacturing tolerances are not very strict?

I use a C/Y 50 1.7, 28 2.8 and 85 2.8 on a 5d2. The 50 and the 28 catch on the mirror on occasion, I keep meaning to file down the tabs but it catches so infrequently that I keep forgetting to do it.

when I had a 5D, every contax lens I had cleared the mirror and Ive had all of the following on it:
50/1.7, 50/1.4, 28/2.8, 35/1.4, 100/2.8, 35-70/3.4, 28-85
I think for most lenses it has as much to do with your particular camera as it does the lens. I eventually shaved my mirror but it was for a canon 55/1.2 FL. This is a nice reference for contax on Canon:

EDIT: sorry, just saw the link above. Anyway, with the tolerances on the 5D, for some lenses you just have to try and hope you're lucky

There is also variation among Contax lenses. My first copy of the 35-70 cleared my 5D fine but the 2nd one didn't.

Not to mention that the adapters themselves can vary in thickness. I had no problems with the 1.7/50 or 35-70, but my 28 would not clear with one adapter -- switched it out and had zero issues. I checked the thickness of the "bad" adapter and it was thinner than the others I had.

Is there anyone successfully adapted Rollei 16/2.8 on 5D mk II?
l have a adapter which will reach infinity focus, but there is a problem. The lens locking position deviated 10-20 degrees from the top which makes the lens shade being captured on the image. How do you solve this problem?

BTW, Rollei 35/1.4 (1st version) will not clear the mirror of my 5D mk II.

Thanks, guys! Another question - it seems as though the aperture adjusting tab is hitting the mirror, and the issue can be fixed by filing that down by a fraction of a millimeter. I'm thinking of buying an old Yashica film camera to use these lenses on as well. Is it possible to file the aperture lever down just enough that it won't catch on the 5D, but will work with the film camera?
