p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · cheap lens recommendations for D800e

Hi guys I finally got my D800e but I've spent all my money on the camera so I don't have anymore for a lens haha !
anyway I'm looking for a set of cheap but sharp manual focus lenses I could use on the camera
>manual focus<
-35mm
-50mm
-telephoto (85 90 100 135 150 or anything in between)

I'm just looking for something that would fully resolve on the D800e (if the lens has to be stopped down is fine too)

p.s my friend lent me his 100mm f/2.8 series E it's super sharp it's great

I am in the same boat, and enjoy my 105/2.5 AIS (approx $250) on eBay. Also consider the Samyang 35mm 1.4, and the 85mm 1.4. And spend some money on a magnifying eyepiece to improve focusing.

Here is an example of one of my first snapshots with the 35mm 1.4 Samyang on the D800E:

And here is a 2:1 zoom of this file:

There is only one: Nikon DK-17M. It's around 40 bucks I think.

I got a 85 f/1.8g as a relatively inexpensive lens I can actually use. Ideally the 35 f/1.4g is my next lens, but the money is far off...

If you look on eBay you''ll find a Holga lens in Nikon mount for about forty bucks. That would fit your philosophy of buy a very expensive camera and then buy the cheapest lens possible to use on it.

Come on Kent, we all know the glass has little importance, it just keeps dust off the sensor

For an everyday walk around lens you should try the new 24-85mm F/3.5-5.6 (~$550) . But ideally a nice set of primes would be great!

55mm micro 3.5 is very sharp and cheap. The 2.8 version too, but can get oily blades so watch out for that.

28 2.8 ai-s is good...
180 2.8 is awesome....

Agreed.
I would add the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI or AIS and the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AIS (early version "long nose").
If you donīt need a fast 135mm, the Nikkor 135mm f/3.5 AI is very sharp and amazingly cheap.

The assortment of excellent MF glass made by Nikon is rather delicious and many of theses lenses can be bought for a remarkably low price. I discovered them only after buying a D700 two and a half years ago. Since then I've bought 29 such lenses and have been having a blast with them. Carl and Jose are among the dozens of folks from around the world hanging out on a thread I started on this topic that you'll generally find at or near the top of the Nikon forum.

Since we have quite a few folks using these lenses on D800 and D800E cameras, I can say without equivocation that you'll find a few options to suit your needs. You might want to browse the last few hundred pages of the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread and get some ideas. I believe eight of the lenses in my kit cost less than a hundred dollars. If you're prepared to focus manually, you have a great deal of fun ahead of you exploring inexpensive, beautifully crafted lenses that perform beautifully. Have fun...

I have experience with these lenses and I recommend them:
55 3.5 micro... you can get BGN copies at KEH for around $60
105 2.5 AI... BGN for around $100
Also 85 f/2 for around $120

I'm also thinking about selling my 24 1.4G, 85 1.4G, 300/4 AFS, 70-200 VRII and getting a D4. I can then put the cheapest 50 1.8 on it. Hey at least I now have a D4!

I was going to do that until they told me that's the last thing I should upgrade and just invest in lenses.

The 85mm F/1.8G does extremely well for it's price and it's very well received since its launch.

Here is my Tokina 17mm 3.5 RMC that I got on e-bay for $130 shipped. I got lucky and probably have driven the prices up on this superb lens, lol.

Mind you this shot was taken my Nikon F5 on Reala - which also needs a sharp lens for resolution (among other things). For shots taken with this lens on my Canon 1Ds, you can click on my "www" and most everything on there was taken with said lens. Oh and incase you are thinking why I used this with a 1Ds, I didn't realize the lens was in Nikon mount when I bought it - so I used a fotodiox adapter for a year or so.

That photo is dreadful. What have you done to it. The building looks sharp, but the cliff looks solarized!!!

It's Florida. Thats the side of a sinkhole. Yes, it is moving as the sinkhole expands. In 100 years most of Florida will be one huge sinkhole.

I have an old Series E 70-210 f4 push/pull lens. I've always gotten great results with it. It never reached the exalted legend stage like the 75-150, I always was very happy with it.

The OP said "SHARP" but cheap. That does exist believe it or not.

Here's a list of a few:

16/3.5 AI - Sharpest fisheye Nikon has ever made and can be had for under $600
20/2.8 - Stopped down it can be pretty darned sharp - $350
50/1.8G - Sharp edge to edge on my D800 and under $200
105/2.5 AIS - $125 and I see no problems getting to use all 36MP - one of my main lenses
200/4 AIS - Stopped down it's pretty darned good and $150
180/2.8 AF or AF-D - Excellent at f/4 and up for $350

Great lenses only have to be expensive if you want AF-S, VR, CPU, etc.

Today I bought a 50 f/2 H-C AI'd for $52 that is in beautiful condition. Bjorn Rorslett rates the lens as a 5, 5+ on the D and D2h. This old lens is beautifully crafted and in EX+ condition. I mention this merely to demonstrate that one doesn't need to spend a great deal of money to buy excellent lenses that will sing on the D800. Four of the last five lenses I've bought that mount on my D700 cost less than a hundred dollars each. Don't fret... just buy an AI or AI'd Nikkor lens and you're in great shape.
