Anyone know anything about this lens? Any good optically? My wife just found one at a garage sale, got it for 30 dollars. It has the original metal hood, looks to very well kept, used but loved. Heavy as hell, wondering if it would balance on a m4/3s......

Hi,
The Hexanon 35-100/2.8 was something of a trend setting zoom in 1973, when it came out. It was probably the first zoom of this focal range that was this fast. Of course, technology being what it was at the time, such speed made for a monster lens. It has a high reputation for image quality for a zoom of that period. Technically speaking, it is a varifocal lens, which means you have to focus anew every time you alter the focal distance setting. This makes working with this lens a bit slow, but it is this technical trait that made its image quality superior to most other zooms available at the time. Using it today is not terribly practical, mostly on account of its stupendous weight (this is not something you mount on your 4/3, but something you latch your 4/3 onto), but also because comparable image quality can be had in much smaller lenses today. This lens is mostly sought by collectors, the occasional Konica freak (including yours truly), and chronic GAS sufferers. It usually fetches from a couple to several hundred $ on the bay and is a piece of glass that turns heads. Anyway, congrats to your wife. She knows a deal when she sees one (I'd go back to that garage sale. The 28-100 is not the first Hexanon people used to buy. There may be more where that one came from).

I snagged a bogen tripod and head for 3 bucks at a rummage sale a few weeks back. Always worth looking.

A large lens never "balances" on a camera body. When lenses are large and attached to the body, carry it by the lens. This is going to make sense, for instance, if you are using a 300mm f2.8 on a DSLR body - but it works well anytime you encounter a lens that is larger than the body it's attached to.

IOW - You don't struggle to lift the lens by using the body - you support the lens and grip the body normally. So, the idea that I oft hear of a lens being too big or heavy is, IMHO, irrelevant, if you want to use a particular lens. You just adapt how you handle it.
