Like many of us in here, my camera bag is made up of mostly primes. I've been finding that when I go hiking or traveling, I take my 35L with me, which is definitely a great lens, but I find myself frustrated with the lack of versatility. When I travel or hike, I prefer just having one lens with me and not bringing a whole bag, and I've been wrestling with which lens to pick up for this use.

On first glance, the 5D2 kit lens, the 24-105mm f/4 IS seems a good bet, I've never used it though.

What's your favourite travel lens if you had to just pick one?

Currently I take an NEX7 when I travel. But I'm looking at an OMD and the Panasonic 12-35. I also take my Leica with a couple of lenses. The whole kit goes in a waist bag and weighs less than a DSLR and single prime.

There's no way I'll ever drag a huge DSLR hiking or travelling any more, now that the image quality of the mirrorless is up to the task.

35mm for sure. Used it on a vacation to North Myrtle Beach early this month. While we were there, we shot a photo journey for a recently engaged couple. Definitely my do everything lens. On next year's vacation, I'll probably take my bridge camera set to a 35mm equivalent unless we pick up a third full frame; I want a camera I won't have to worry about if it gets wet.

Leica m something or another. A zm 28mm and a voigtlander 50mm. Lighter and smaller than a dslr and one lens.

Not that I have any of these. But they're on my short list.

Until then it's either a 28 or a 50 depending on my mood.

I don't travel much but if I did I'd probably take a 35mm 2.0. With the weight saved from the 35L I could carry an 85 1.8 which is also pretty light and good quality for the weight. Both are backups for the L versions when shooting weddings.

Fuji XP1 with the 18....
The 35 is sweet but not quite wide enough for general use.

I always took a 35 and a 85.

I always tend to get drunk too.

Kinda thinking the 35 and the 85 isn't such a good idea.

I need a travel/drunk camera solution.

One (light) lens.

D800 + 28 1.8 = 28, 35, 42 done.

also has onboard flash which comes in handy at times.

Last trip I actually used the heck out of an 8mm Rokinon fish ... had an absolute blast, but realize it's not for everybody ... those two lenses would take up less space and weigh less than a 24-70

I went to Taiwan for 3 weeks earlier in the summer and took the 5D, 35L and the 24-70L. The 35L never left the camera. I brought a flash too but never used it. It and the 24-70L will stay home next time.

I have the 24-105 for photobooths. I tihnk next time I got traveling I'll throw it on f/8 and do that. Seems to be just right.

My 1 lens travel kit is a Tamron 28-75 2.8. Good balance of range, speed, size and IQ for my purposes. I generally prefer this to the 24-70L I have for non-paid work due to it's size.

I have also used the 24-105L + 50 1.8 a lot for travel. Yes, that's two lenses and OP stated 1, but it is a light kit that covers most everything for me.

I always take a 5D+24-105 with me. It's great for travel. When we travel by car, I can take more gear with me. This year I took 5D+24-105+35L+16-35+40D. When you take a walk through a tight gorge you'll appreaciate the FF+16-35 combo.
I must say that I used the 40D+35L combo a lot. It's close to a normal lens FOV (56mm), has high quality and I can shoot in very dark spaces. I find that I don't use my 24-105 that much anymore when the 35L is on the camera, be it FF or crop. But then I have that 16-35 ready if - need to go wider.
One hike I only took my 40D+16-35+24-105. Didn't shoot the 24-105 even once. But my range is 25-165mm for when I need it.

To the OP: if I could only have one lens, it would be the 24-105 on FF hands down.

35 f/2. No doubt. Light, cheap, and if I drop it/lose it, I won't cry until the cows come home.

Ideally though, I think I'd just pack my 17-35 and a 50 f/1.4 prime and be done with it.
