I will preface this post by saying yes there are a lot of pictures in this post but I am only looking for people to leave ONE bit of advice on something we might have done different/better/etc.
Hopefully that will make thing easier and also leave Jackie and I with some good stuff to think about. The hardest part of the wedding for us was when she came down the isle (blinding sun) and when they did their first dance in a 2 car garage to an industrial techno/rock song that had a very particular "vibe" i wanted to capture. Lighting a garage = hard.

This couple is very near and dear to MANY people here on FM. They won the modeling contest Hoffer had for G3 and have probably the most photographed proposal of all time. This was the first time I felt "pressure" shooting a wedding since I shot with Baines last year.

For me and Jackie this is basically our "ideal" couple and the types of weddings we want to shoot when we eventually head out west next year.
A big thanks again to everyone at G3, especially the instructors. I consider you all my good friends and was very humbled to shoot this wedding.

Sorry for the insane amount of pics I just did the whole blog post because I am lazy
Thanks
Doug

Wow! This is really exceptional work Doug. Probably my favorite set from you. Love the proessing (both B&W and color) - very clean. Tough to come up with a useful pice of advice other than to say that the mood of the "dancing" shots from a photographic perspective doesn't match the rest of the day. If I were blogging this wedding I would simply omit them. Insane coverage from start to finish. Well done!

fabulous imagery in here for sure.

a few things to think about.

1) maybe not to think about, but something that disappointed me. that first shot is killer. seriously beautiful. when i saw it as number 1, i thought that they would be getting married with that atmosphere. i was let down to see the venue in midday. sounds dumb, and beyond your control, but maybe dont include #1?

2) something to think about. 110 is too many. i know that sounds dumb, but i think some of the more average shots weaken some of the more stellar shots. i think if you lost the following, the set would be stronger:

8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 19, 22, 24, 26, 30, 38, 41, 44b (totally robs a great shot on the left), 53, 56, 60, 66, 67, 74, 75, 76, 81, 82, 83, 91, 94, 95, 102, 103, 105, 109.

by doing so, you would still have 70 images on the blog. i just feel that the ones i mentioned could have been taken by many photographers...not just doug. i feel like you are including those images to demonstrate every single stage of the day. my personal feeling is that coverage doesnt have to be so literal.

with that said, his is going to make for one hell of an album! congrats guys!

Chuck -- thank you! I am going to go through the #s later to analyze those shots when I have some more time.

#1 is straight from Hassas himself. At G3 one of his big critiques of us is that he thought we did not lead our blog sets off with a bang. He told us to pick the very best shot put it first and then do the blog from there on matter the order or "story".
So that is that. Normally I would put a shot out of order like that but I specifically was thinking about what Sam said when Jackie and I took this shot.
I understand what you are saying though.

To everyone else... I appreciate the kind words rule breakers

my critique isnt where the shot appears, but rather that it is kind of like 'false advertising' in a sense. it just seems out of place in this set because of when they got married. it doesnt seem part of the 'story'.

Take this with an amateur grain of salt, but it seems as though many of the shots feel like you were rushed. Maybe a fast paced day, or not enough time - I just see lots of important bits cut off - hands, feet, heads, etc, but you should have had time to properly pose (mainly the portraits I'm speaking of).

I still think they are stellar, just a comment that came to mind.

Also, too bad about the blue water bottle in the background (at the log alter..)

Dude, these are awesome. The first shot is killer, and I really wish they would've gotten married at night with the stars. I see Chucks point about 1, but I think you should leave it in, just because it's a strong shot... but maybe as the last image. I really liked 13 a lot too. Great little moment. I think the light for 61 is almost perfect, but I just wish you took that shot from a higher angle. Don't tell me you can't climb trees! I dig your B&W's usually, but there seems to be some kind of grayish thing going on. It's most noticeable on 63 and 64, but clears up by 72. Did you do something different, or were those shot on the LF? Regardless, this is an awesome set from you, and looks pretty stellar all around.

So, having reread your post, let me talk about 37. As usual, a grain of salt is in order.

To me, the processing (exposure) looks different in both. I am bothered by the way the pole is at a different angle in both of them. That takes away from having them together.

In 37b, I am not sure any of the wood, other than the railing, is necessary. Crop closer in. Ask yourself what really is the story or the subject of these shots. What do you really need to tell that story. Are the poles and the roof part of that story?

I also wish that the background was exposed correctly. Of course, that isn't possible without having lit the area under the roof, but if it were me, I would burn or dodge one or the other areas and bring both sections more in line.

I pick on 37 simply because I see potential in that one. I really think there is something there.

No idea if it makes me a rule breaker or follower, but I really like the lead off with #1. BAM! and continues on. Starts with a brilliant unexpected night shot and ends with the party at the garage. It'd seem a bit off placing it at the end IMO.

Cut off heads (and hands) I'm good with too. Will try to find something to critique later, but for now I'm thoroughly enjoying this set. Sergio has a great point on going vertical more often. Congrats to both you and Jackie on the spectacular work.

I think lots of good advice has been exchanged so am not sure I can add to that.

However, I will say these images show serious mastery in technique... aside from a few intentionally over/under exposed images, everything is perfectly well lit and exposed. Perhaps this is a silly observation, but lately it seems like exposure has been a problem in a lot of recent posts.

Well done, Doug (& Jackie)

@Serg -- Thanks! I have the first one in a vertical I just liked the mothers expression better in that one. I did find that shot a LOT less verticals at this wedding... not sure why but I did notice it.

@KH -- I hear you on the cut off hands/feet etc. The portraits we are showing here are about as traditional as I like to show. We have tons of other very safe normal poses that I think are rather boring (albeit fine shots). Generally speaking I do my best to try to watch for hands and feet but I will make a mental note of that! Thanks

@Sahid -- those are the 4x5 shots. As far as tone goes I think it will be a never ending battle/ quest to find the best way to do it... if there is a best way

@ ACR -- 37 a and b I may go back and fix... well at least b. I could have cropped it a bit but honestly just overlooked it. As far as burning / HDR type stuff... I am always hesitant because I think it looks unnatural. For example the 4x5 shots which follow have WAY more detail in the highlights but to me it looks natural because it is the film. Colorado blessed us with blazing sun that day so my little 6x6 foot area had to basically be Colorado, Breck, scenic, etc etc. all at one time. Thanks for the input!

@MN -- mastery in technique!!! you are far to kind BTW I still need to respond to your PM and should be doing that soon!

@Matt -- I so badly want to come ride with you and Ambrose! We saw a bunch of people riding up Evans... holy shiz. I cannot fathom that. Sorry we did not get together, we ended up shooting some family stuff while we were there and got really busy.
Perhaps we will be moving there .... your state is kind to us

@ everyone who commented on the amount of shots. Noted.
FWIW Jackie and I really enjoy these "whole weekend" weddings. It is just us. We end up with a monumental amount of shots but it really becomes something more than just shooting a wedding.
From our perspective we have observed that we are more relaxed, more motivated, more excited, and just plain better when we are there for the whole thing.
The other thing we have noticed is that these weddings normally are "destination" type weddings.
One of our ongoing goals is to market, find, and book clients that are having weddings like this. Obviously this time was different because we met them through Genesis but the couples are out there.

We are currently putting together a package that encompasses all this stuff into a cohesive set.

Any opinions on that stuff is welcomed too!
Thanks everyone

totally worth the drive through Nebraska....

only thing I can say is, IMO, 98 is one of those shots I think would have benefited from OCF, but I know that's not really your style, so take it with a grain of salt.
