Been searching for a Firewire 800 reader for SDHC cards and can't find one.

Any one know of any for sale?

Really? And this would be what, then?

Dan,

Thanks for the lead, but it appears this firewire reader is not reliable, as you can see from the reviews.

Would like to find a firewire 800 reader.

My point was that the readers are available, although I admit they are much less common than previously. I have one of the Lexar readers, and it works fine. Reviews on Amazon often tend to attract the naysayers, as the folks who have no problems are not as motivated to post. I doubt you will find a FW 800 reader for CF cards and probably no chance of finding a new one for SD cards.

I've been using dozens of these in parallel at long distance for years:
http://www.synchrotech.com/products/card-rw_31_firewire_800_1394b_compactflash_cffire800.html

However, my biggest complaint and source of issues using them is that when you pull a card from a FW800 reader (any FW800 reader), the OS loses the drive letter - taking about 10 seconds to reset before you can put another card in.

Hence, we are now using USB2 and USB3 readers with more consistency (and most USB3 readers have CF and SD card slots.)

But if you don't have to swap cards every 2-3 minutes for 12 hours a day and can wait 10 seconds between swaps, then the FW800 readers are great.

I don't know if their newest one supports SDHC - all my experience has been with CF cards.

If your Mac has a Thunderbolt port, an interesting workaround was posted on DPReview a couple of months ago. It allows a CF card to be read through a Thunderbolt connection using the Seagate Thunderbolt adapter. Since there are SD to CF adapters available that claim to suport SDHC, you should be able to do the same with SD cards.

Most of those SD-> CF adapters limit the transfer rates below USB 2 anyway.

From the overall reviews, I'd call it a piece of cr@p

and over 3 years old as of now. and i do think its longer then that too

FW was a good idea that was never developed to its potential (due to the limited attention span of its originator) except in a few select fields of use.
