I'm switching from the JrX radio popper system to the 600's. I'm curious as to how you are using them? Are you using the ST-E3? Or just triggering your OCFs with an onboard 600?

Any input is valuable!

We do both depending on the situation. I prefer the ST-E3 for the weight so I use that whenever possible. They're identical except for a flash and AF-assist.

I have the ST-E3 + 600EX-RT and getting my second 600EX-RT unit today in time for an engagement session.

Though I haven't officially used it in a reception setting, I am guessing I would use the ST-E3 to trigger the two flashes if I can get used to AI Servo mode to get around low light focusing with the 5d3. Otherwise, I'd have to get a third 600EX-RT for on camera AF assist.

I use the ST-E3 all the time. Same when I used RP's, I only used the hot shoe transmitter.

Focusing performance of the ST-E3 should be similar to that of the 580 series with the built in IR-assist... in other words "pretty good".

Actually, I don't believe the ST-E3 has the focus assist beam.

The ST-E3 does not have focus assist.

I use an on camera 600 for focus assist.

Personally I love the 600s. I bought 3 with the ST-E3. So easy.

thanks for the info, all! talked to tony today and he confirmed that the st-e3 does not have flash assist.

i just bought two of them today. they have a $30 instant rebate and at BH, they include a free "Includes Free Pearstone NM-4H23 4 AA NiMH Batteries (2300mAh) with 4 Hour Charger (110-240V) ($13.99 Value)"

so each flash was $567. no more radio poppers for me!

You're right... I was thinking of the ST-E2, previous version.

The burden of worrying about whether my triggers will work has now been lifted with the 600's and the ST-e3. Love love love them.

I bought three of them along with the st-e. I have not used them yet as I want to make sure I have all the menus down pat before I pull them out for a wedding. I still love my pocket wizards and manual flashes.

During certain parts of the reception, I still shoot with two cameras. Using the flex/mini system, each camera would have a flex or mini + flash which allows me to trigger my OCFs.

With the 600EX system and having one master with multiple slaves - is there a way to have a similar setup? Can I set two master flashes to trigger the same OCFs?

Yes you can use 2 master 600s triggering the same OCF 600/s. Just set them all to the same channel using radio and then you can even do groups each with independent power levels. Just look up group mode in the 600EX manual.

I'm on the 600EX-RTs Chuck (just got my 5th one). LOVE them. I would get the ST-E3 IF they had the AF assist. They are worth every penny IMO. No more worrying and lugging around triggers, receivers, batteries, sleeves and adapters. For the most part, I just set the flash up, select the group and start working on dialing the settings.

Thanks - simpler to setup than I thought.
