p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Aphidoletes aphidamyza

Aphids have been a real problem this year on the pepper crop in the greenhouse. Being certified organic limits control options. I have always followed a no spray control method so using beneficial insects has been the best method of controlling pests. The Aphidoletes aphidamyza is a small midge that lays it's eggs among the aphid colonies. When the eggs hatch the larvae crawl along the leaves and bite the aphids on the leg injecting a toxin that paralyzes them and then they feed on the aphids bodily fluid. They are quite voracious and will kill between 10 and 100 aphids a day depending on how heavy the aphid population is.
These are all shot with a 1DMKIV, MP-E 65mm @ 5X and a single head of the MT-24EX flash.

Thanks for the replies. It has turned into an ongoing project for my supplier now. There are not many clear and close enough images of many of these beneficials available because most of them are so tiny. Some of the predatory mites are almost impossible to see with the bare eye. I have been trying to get shots of them with the MP-E 65 and a set of Kenko tubes stacked. It would be a lot easier if they didn't keep moving! Seriously hard on the eyes to keep focusing after a while. Here are a few more of the really tiny guys I am shooting.

Interesting project.
Not really worth using ext tubes with an MPE-65, you only take the mag to around 6.5:1 with a full set and end up with a very long lens. Probably better to try using a TC or even better try using a 10X microscope objective rig.

Excellent series and info!

Brian is right: It's best to use a teleconverter with the MPE-65mm (the MPE is actually a reversed lens on an adjustable extension tube).
