p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Alternative Tilt-shift lens offerings?

I've been interested in the effects tilt and shift lenses can give for a while. As a hobbyist, I'd like to play around with it, but the Canon branded lenses are quite a bit expensive for an experiment. Is there anything else out there that is build well enough as to be not too frustrating to learn on, but less expensive than the Canon stuff?

Thanks,
Brian

Check out the Hartblei Super rotator. I've used the 80mm f2.8 and found it to be very good optically.

I've seen the original Canon 24 TSE f3.5L lenses for as low as $500... they're a bit beat up, but would be well worth it at that price. I traded for a near new one recently and while it suffers from some chromatic aberration where the highlights meet darker tones, it is brilliantly sharp and fun to use.

I've since purchased the PTLens plugin for photos hope/aperture/lightroom and that cleans up the CA better than anything I've used thus far.
Here's a link to a blog post with an image from Lake Louise two weeks ago with the lens: http://bruceleventhal.blogspot.com/2012/06/trip-alert-update-1.html
I'll be updating the blog tonight with a new post from Bow Lake in Banff NP made with the lens. While I'd love the newer version, at less than half the price, the 24mm TSE v1 is quite a bargain for what you get.
regards,
bruce

Look at the lensbaby stuff?

Other well machined tilt shifts tend to be as expensive or more than canons..

Yes, get an original Canon 24 TS-E in good shape for around $800. Sell it for the same if you don't like it. LR3 an d4 clean up the CA and touch of distortion it is known for (less distortion than the Nikon 24 PC).

Both Olympus and Zeiss make excellent 35mm f/2.8 Shift only lenses. The Olympus is affordable, the Zeiss, not so much. There is also an extremely rare Oly 24mm Shift that is priced in the stratosphere, and now that Canon has released their v2 24, there's little reason to consider the Oly 24 even if you could find one. I own both the Oly and Zeiss 35's and am selling the Oly, if anyone is interested.

There're also the Arsat/Arax brand tilt-shifts, if you can find one. Much cheaper than Hartblei or Canon, but I wouldn't use one without live view.

Hah that goes with canon tilt shift, much easier with live view, even the metering.

I use Mamiya M645 medium format lenses on my 1DsIII and 5DII with a Mirex M645 to EOS tilt-shift adapter, for lenses with focal lengths from 35mm to 150mm. The adapter costs almost $600 with shipping and tax (it's from Germany), but the lenses are really inexpensive. The IQ from these lenses (at least the ones I use) is as good as anything in the small format (135) lens world, including the best from Canon, Zeiss and Leica.

I also have the Canon TS-E 24/3.5L II and will probably get the TS-E 17/4L next year.

Here's some relevant threads from the Alternative forum.

The Hartblei 80 mm Super Rotator is a fun lens but tempermental. It is decently sharp, nothing great. However, it flares oddly and has low contrast at f/2.8 and f/4 and f/11 and f/16. It's not bad at f/5.6 and f/8.

The new 'digital' version of it is supposed to be much better, but at more than twice the price. [Take note all those anti-Canon folk who get apoplectic whenever a Mark II is priced more than an original.]

Two more made with the original Canon 24mm TSE... hard to beat these when you can find them used for the price of an alt lens...

Oh, I was looking exactly in this several times to find suitable replacements for the overpriced Canon T/S lenses! The old Hartblei super rotators are hard to find, and the new ones are super expensive. I think the best option as alternative might be the MC Arax T/S lenses.

Me as well, and I concur with Jim that above 150mm it starts to get a bit odd. The tilt at the very least, ceases to perform as you'd like. The shift can go on and on past 150mm. I which MIREX didn't write/print info on the inner surfaces of the adapter, and I also wish they'd try some sort of alternative "flocking" method as the machining they do helps with reflections but it's not really matte.

I asked them about making an adapter without the writing/printing on the inside shift plate and they seemed really sour on it, in part by replying that it doesn't affect the image.

I disagree.

I have heard that Samyang will release a 24mm tiltshift later this year.

I reckon it will be a great bang for the buck. Just look how good their latest primes are.

You can buy a used 4x5 Calumet C-1 camera for about $200 and a 150mm lens ("normal" for 4x5) for about another $200. Then you'll have all the tilts and shifts you could possibly use. Of course the film is kind of expensive. : - )

I bought a Mirex Tilt shift adapter and cross adapted old M645 Mamiya lenses to my 5D2.
Lenses I have adapted included Mamiya 24mm FE ( quirky results if you have not seen a semi fisheye tilt shift pano ), 35mm, 50mm shift, 55mm, 150mm. ( Which I got them for the cheap from a studio company that switched to digital MF locally )

I have the 17 TSE as well and it is pretty stellar class of its own. I also cross adapt an old Nikon 85mm micro PC ( 1st version ).

You can find some of the stuffs taken with my setup : http://kaleidoscopy.com/

Cheers
Ryan

While not cheap cheap, the PC-Nikkors can be pretty decent. They are shift only though. I have a 1970s 35/2.8 and it is great.
