Is there a cheaper alternative to the Cokin Z Pro series 164 polarizing filter that is just about as good? Why is it so ridiculously expensive?

you may want to look at the Lee 105 circ polarizer. That is, if you can find one. Like all Lee products, they are often out of stock everywhere.

I'm not sure how much Cokin's is? But I have Singh Ray's sprocketed polarizer made specially for the Z holder.
