p.1 #1 · Nikon 28 1.8G - anyone using it?

I'm just curious if anyone is using this new lens (Nikon 28 f/1.8G) at weddings. If so, are you using it in lieu either a 35 or 24 or both? It seems like it might be too wide to be used in place of a 35 unless you change composition to place the subject(s) more toward the center.

I've used it, I think it is great. I like 28 better than 24 or 35. With 23 and 35 you can always find a reason to wish you had the other lens. With the 28 you can easily make due and spend 1/4. great optic and very light as well.

have one, love it.

use it with D800.

Wider than 35 (which at times seems constrictive)

Nowhere near as distortioney as the 24

Also with the D800 crop modes (I have one of the front buttons programmed to let me switch it doubles as a 3 FL prime/zoom ... 28, 34, 42.

LOVE IT.

Don't have anything processed from a wedding that I can link you to right now, but here's a post I made in the Nikon forum after using it exclusively at a children's party.

I'm pretty interested in this topic: I have the 24g and 24-70 and while the focal lengths are redundant, the depth of field I get at 1.4 is not. The 24g offers pretty amazing separation from the background; the best I've seen at such wide angles. How well does the 28g compare? Can anybody speak about this?

I'm grabbing one of these shortly.

If it has the same IQ as the 85 I'm gonna be a happy big funny looking sweaty guy.

You mean using the 28 will make you fat?

I've got one and really like using it for getting ready shots. It's sharp, inexpensive, a nice focal length, and pairing it with the new 85 1.8 makes an awesome combo.

I did, and was impressed with the IQ. But, respectfully, before I trade my 24g in for the 28g, I'd like to get other's perspectives.

This lens is definitely on my short list (which is actually quite long). After the 50, 28 is my most used focal length, for the same reasons Ale mentioned. I have the 28 f/2 and 2.8 (both manual focus) and they are pretty much glued to my film bodies.

Oh, for sure !!! I just wanted to make sure that aside from people's biased opinions you also had seen objective stuff out of a non-opinionated camera

Great lens. Small, weightless. I own it.

Optically similar to the 28 1.4 and 24 1.4 IMO.

Mechanically similar to the 50 1.8/1.4 G (which is not a good thing necessarily)

I've owned the 28 1.4 --
Great lens, but lack of MF + crazy price + cracking A/M switch caused me to sell.

24 1.4 --
Just not a huge fan of the 24mm FoV. I prefer to use my 20 at receptions to get closer to everyone and the 28 ends up being a much better general purpose focal length.

I think 20/28/50 is a much better trio of primes than 20/35/50. My second shooter uses a 35 (and I couldn't pry it from his cold, dead hands) for basically everything in that range, so YMMV.

Reading these responses is interesting. Obviously, we all have our own styles and opinions. Mine is this: I love my 20 for getting people up close. It allows me to get right in the middle of things. I like the 35 for a longish-wide. I feel like it just has a classic "look" to it. 28? It's neither wide enough nor long enough for me, and I'd probably never go for one.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like this lens would definitely be worth looking into as a budget alternative to the big dogs (24/35 1.4) without sacrificing optical quality.

@lisy78 Thanks for the link. Your sample images are fantastic!

I have been using it. Worked great along with my 35 1.4. I still use 35 1.4 more than 28 since the distortion is smaller at 35. You have to be careful with 28 1.8. Here are several photos taken with 28 1.8:

Sold 24 1.4G the moment I heard the rumor that 28 1.8G was coming. Love it and use it more and more in the situations that I'd normally use 35 1.4G for two reasons, faster AF speed and lighter weight.

Here is a shot taken wide open.
