So, I'm working for a company who makes panels for sublimated printing. I'm wondering if its legal to use street photography (with people in it) or photos with logos (say for example, a race car) for printed samples to display at trade shows. The product being marketed is the panel the photo is printed on.
To put it another way, imagine if Kodak/Fuji had a new paper they wanted to bring to say, PMA or Photokina and wanted photos to show off this paper quality, what restrictions would they have on the type of photos that they could use or require releases for? Thanks!
It's advertising, if you want to be safe, get a release for every recognizable person in each picture that you plan to use.
Look at the kinds of pictures that are in any stock agency collection. You won't see any street shots in the regular collections (they can be in the editorial collections) for sale, because you can't clear all the people in the shot.
In your example, they would have photography commissioned specifically for that usage, or they would buy stock to use that is already cleared.
We already do the microstock/stock photography route. Its just that I have some personal work marketing is interested in using (and I get to keep the prints after the shows). Thanks for the responses though!
I'm obsessive when it comes to model and location releases. In the USA it's way too easy to get sued.
If your client is making money off of the images you are providing, a release is mandatory...it's actually for your own good!

Yes...you will need releases.
