I am trying to decided between these two lenses. Besides the difference in focal lengths and apertures. What are opinions to set one lens above the other?

I keep going back and forth. (Note that if I consider the 24-70 f2.8 it is larger and heaver and doesn't have VR which is important for video.)

I currently have:
70-200 vr2
85 18G
50mm 1.4D

I'm going to jump on this thread, if you don't mind, because I've been comparing the Nikon and Sigma 24-70s, but the fact that the zoom/focus rings rotate the "other" way worries me. I've tried shooting Nikon and Canon at the same time and that's the one thing that trips me up when switching between the two from shot to shot.

Anyone have any experience, eg, shooting with both a Nikon 70-200 and Sigma 24-70? How long before you stop missing shots because you quickly zoom in the wrong direction? If ever...

Farski,

No worries. I ruled out the sigma because when I looked at it at B&H, it seemed to hunt on my nikon d800 at close focus and made a clicking noise. I didn't know if it was their copy or something regular with the lens. I didn't want to take the chance.

I didn't notice the focus rings were different but I was looking more at form factor between the 24-70 options.

Jeff

Very timely post. I was about to post the same question. I'm really struggling with the 24-120 vs Tamron 24-70 VC choice as well. I'll be using whichever lens I choose on a D800e as a travel, walk around, free styling lens. Now that the Nikon mount Tamron 24-70 VC is shipping, I hope some folks out there with access to both can chime in re the relative strengths and weaknesses of both lenses.

On the D800e, I'm currently shooting with:

Zeiss 21 f/2.8
Nikon 28 f/1.8
Nikon 85 f/1.8

I really love my Canon 24-105 f/4 IS (on a 5D2 and 5D3) and hope to find the same type of lens for the D800e.

Cheers!

akclimber,

I actually ordered the tamron from amazon but it won't get to me for a while since it is backordered But, it has allowed me to reconsider my options as well. I recently saw a blog post by Dan Carr (http://dancarrphotography.com) which gives me hesitation.

The Nikon goes to 120mm...that's 50mm of length, a lot in my book.

I love my older Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. $1299 is pricey enough that I'd probably choose a used Nikon. VC is a big plus, but at that price tag, I'm probably going Nikon.

BTW - here's the link to the Dan Carr review mentioned above:

If you like the Canon 24-105 I think you'll be more then happy with the Nikon equivalent. I owned 2 different 24-105s and used them with the 5D, 1DMKIII & IV and I think the 24-120 f4 VR is superior overall to the Canon. It is a tad bigger and heavier then the 24-105 though (based on memory)

Thanks Jeff, I hadn't seen that review. If I was more of a video guy, the breathing would certainly give me pause. I think for me it comes down to over all sharpness and faster aperture vs added focal length.

Decisions, decisions...

Great input - thanks! I'm leaning towards the 24-120 just for the added focal length for travel, etc. if for no other reason. Good to know the 24-120 compares favorably to the Canon 24-105. I do think I'm one of the lucky ones who ended up with a very nice copy of the 24-105

Cheers!

Yeah. The focus breathing gives me worry. Not know much about it, does it happen on manual focus or does it also occur on auto focus.

I recently handled the Canon version of the Tamron 24-70 and I have to say the focus was snappy, even on a 5D2.

I've used the Nikon 24-70 a few times and really enjoy that lens. The build quality, the autofocus, everything about it is great IMO.

But, being so close in price, I'd still opt for the Nikon version. If the Tamron were a few hundred dollars cheaper, it would be a competitor for sure.

Thanks Derek. I think for a general walk around lens the 24-70 nikon is too heavy and big compared to the Tamron or Nikon 24-120. That said, I am still leaning towards the Tamron for the fixed f2.8.

After watching some videos shot with Tamron's VC, I'm wondering how it stacks up to the Nikon's. It doesn't look anywhere near as smooth as what I've gotten out of my Canon 24-105 or the Nikon 70-200, but it's hard to say whether that's the people shooting the reviews or the lens itself.

I'd have to go with the Nikon. It's a lens I am almost dead set on (buying used so I better be set on it). The other lens I considered was the older 28-70/2.8 AF-S. VR is important, though, as I'll have much tougher time taking motion-free street shots with the 28-70.

I've owned 2 Tamrons: 17-50/2.8 and 28-75/2.8. They both felt, well....cheap. The 17-50 was razor sharp with great contrast and colors, though. the 28-75 was bought used and the rubber on the lens barrel was very loose and poorly designed. I hope they've stepped their game up with the new 24-70VC. Surely they have.

The 24-120 isn't without "flaws" or shortcomings. For $1,000, what more could we expect?

I decided I've obsessed and stressed out enough about it and ordered a 24-120 this afternoon Should be here before the weekend. I'll report back on my results with the D800e. I'll compare it to the 28 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8 and, with an adapter on a 5D3, to the Canon 24-105 just for kicks.

Good luck w/your decision, Jeff! (hope I made the right one - it's all a bunch of compromises)

Cheers & thanks for starting this thread!

My 24-120 f4 is very sharp and stays on my d800 90% of the time. It only comes off if I need wider or portrait stuff in low/natural light then I switch to my primes.

Great to hear! Thanks! That's how I feel about my Canon 24-105.

+1

If you check my flickr link, most of my recent shots were taken with the 24-120/4 VR + D700. It's my default lens for most things. On a recent trip through Central California, I carried everything, but found that I used the 24-120 by far the most. I recently sold a Tamron 28-75/2.8 no-BIM - the Nikon has better build quality, color rendition, AF, and VR. Sharpness is about the same. Only downside is the Nikon doesn't do 2.8, has more distortion (easily corrected in LR), is heavier, and costs more.

Overall it's an excellent lens. It just gets average reviews because people wanted the 24-120 to have 24-70 performance at the 28-300 price. It's the middle kid so it never gets a fair shake. But it's an excellent all-rounder, especially if you need 24mm.

I am interested in the Tamron 24-70 VC in Nikon mount also. Can you tell me who may have one in stock?
Thanks
Dave
