Thanks Philip, Briantho for sympathy. Thanks Goosemang for a praise, your name sound very original.
Very nice set Briantho, I was even stuned for awhile and did followed the flickr link you gave - many excells there, worth to spend time. A little feel sorry that the Nex files still in medium range, my favourite is large and original sizes.

wow what an eye opening thread!!!

Briantho and Contas: what adapters are you using to mount the Contax 645 lenses to the smaller bodies? I only know the conurus-converted NAM to Canon and the Kipon adapters for Canon/Nikon on ebay. But their prices are insanely high.

Hi thminhduc, Briantho uses a market adaptor for his Apo-Makro-Planar not AA (Auto-Aperture).
My 2 Contax 645 lenses are DIY mount, AA for both and and AF for 80mm f/2.I hear about Conurus conversion that way (expensively) but never saw an image example , so I have a little doubt about someone already paid for that.

Nice photo Contas.

If I understand correctly, you have made your own adapter for Contax 645 with auto aperture and auto focus support?

Could you explain how you did it, and maybe show some pics of the adapter?

I think it took a very long time for Conurus to be able to provide converted NAM-1 adapters for Canon. If you did it without the use of the NAM-1, that would indeed be very very impressive. I'd like to buy one or two if you're selling...

I do my conversions for my own usage and face the greatest ever seen in my life the shortage of lens info, no a single manufacture provides the details about the constructions and the parts, you have to buy it, open it and found that you are stuck of parts incompatibility (in case you already know about popular lens parts).(will continue - have go to a short meeting ).

I did 4 conversions for contax N: 2 of 28-80mm ,1 of 70-200mm,
1 of 24-85mm, and 2 contax 645: 1 of 120mm and 1 of 80mm.
All the lens have AF and AA except 120mm is a manual focus lens. You already have one 120mm, its an amazing lens right wo so without AA you still get excel. pics, if you want the greater DOF for 1:1 macro is another story.
My 120mm has a transplanted PCB, so although it's a manual focus but it has AF confirm beep anounces that the focus is in and ease me to take the pic at a long distance.
ADD: I did answered once long time before about conversion here on FM :

I tried this combo Apo-Makro-Planar on SD1 for wild life shooting, it resolutes more details than Contax N but gets the thinner DOF at WO.Iso 100 1/200s handheld, flashed.

Hi Contas, really nice lens you have there.
I have been using medium format lenses on my SD10 and SD14 for about 10 years now.
I started with the excellent M645 80mm f2.8 N (which I bought used for £50 from a camera shop in Guildford) then I got the M645 45mm f2.8 N, then the M645 150mm f3.5 N and finally the M645 210mm f4 N. I was dissapointed with the 45mm, as it could not even match the cheap Pentacon 50mm f1.8 for sharpness. The 150mm and 210mm were really nothing special either.
I ended up selling all of them except the 80mm, which still is the best of the lot, even though it was the cheapest!
I also have the Helios 40 and now the Canon FD 85mm f1.2 L, so the 80mm doesn't really get much use these days, if at all, but I dought I will ever want to sell it.
I also had the Pentacon 6 mount Carl Zeiss Jena 180mm f2.8 "Olympic" Sonnar, which I used via a P6-M42 adapter plus an M42-SA adapter. It had great bokeh but it wasn't really that sharp so I ended up selling it.
Oh, I also had a large format Taylor-Hobson 12" (304.8mm) f4 too.
It was originally an RAF aerial reconnaisance lens, used on Vinten F95 aerial reconnaisance cameras on Jaguars and other RAF reconnaisance aircraft. I converted it to M42 mount, via a helicoid section taken from an old Mirage 135mm f2.8 lens and used it via an M42-SA adapter...It was an outstanding lens...Very sharp for such a large format lens and with very good contrast.
It was never intended to be used with colour film though so colours could get a bit funky in some situations.
I picked it up in almost mint condition for a paltry £41.50, inc postage on ebay, back in 2005.
Stupidly I decided to sell it after buying a faster Tamron Adaptall SP 300mm f2.8 LD IF. The Tamron was faster but I wouldn't say it was sharper.
I sold the T-H for over £180 back in 2008 so I made a fair profit, but I still miss it. I had to sell the Tamron last year to pay my bills (at a slight loss) and this has left me without a decent prime lens of over 135mm focal length currently.

Alf ... you really didn't get a good taste of what the M645 glass has to offer. The 150/2.8 A, 200/2.8 APO, 35/3.5N, 120/4 Macro are all well regarded. I'm fond of my 80/4 Macro, 110/2.8N as well.

I'm not saying there isn't other brands with worthy glass, but unfortunately you experienced some of the lesser M645 glass available.

Hi Alf Beharie, thanks for sympathetic sharing. I read yours for years on DPreview (DaSigmaguy) and respect your Alt career.I never or even think of converting a large format lens, hope you could share the look from that T- H, and the guy, who bought it must be very happy.
As a Foveon user if not for living but for IQ seeking must be an Alt person to fully enjoy the Foveon, and that seeking process make us become "mature" and rather "tough", I think.
I only have 2 and 1/2 years in serious photography and become an Alter since from almost the start, while couldn't accept the Canon look.
The look of the combo: Zeiss lens on Foveon is mind- blowing, I cann't resist it, and it's a leading role of my conversions. Those DPxM are very good but not reached that quality of Zeiss on SD1M, especially MF Zeiss.I just bought Sigma 12-24mm II, very sharp lens, but not that clarity and resolution and it becomes my last compromised lens. You have 10 years working with Foveon, Pls choose and post accordingly your images.I do know FM people are shy from Foveon enough, but not as shy as the previous time , let show the best pics and the understanding will follow.

MF lenses can be fun to use, good quality, and give you leaf shutter advantages, but not a single one of them, at any price, has the resolution of a high quality 35mm format lens. Why? Because they never needed to due to the larger image area...prints didn't require anywhere near the magnification of smaller formats. Just look up lens tests that include resolution charts. Most MF lenses resolved in the 55-65 lpi range while high quality 35mm format lenses resolved over 130 lpi.
Not trying to be a kill-joy, just don't get caught up in a mis-informed fad. OTOH, if you really need a real 1/500s flash sync on any camera body, a leaf shutter medium format lens is the way to go.

That's an overstatement, there are definitely some medium format lenses with resolution as high as great 35mm lenses. Some of the macro lenses come to mind, for example.

Because everyone was saying that MF lenses would give you extreme resolution...

I'm sure my Mamiya 645 200/2.8 APO (one of my sharpest lenses) would be more than fine resolution-wise even on a Nikon D800 though.
