Near Seward- at the mouth of Resurrection Bay- this sea lion paid no attention to our boat. It was dozing, and that meant body parts might be in any position. Eyes closed- mouth open and probably snoring .
Point of information: sea lions are good rock climbers because they can use all four flippers for walking, whereas true seals can only drag their hind flippers. They can only belly-flop along on sandy beaches.
There are other differences, also, but this one helps explain why sea lions often rest on rocks. Seals almost never do.

And all this time I thought true seals liked to sleep on the sand because was more comfortable than sleeping on a rock
Cool capture, Charlie and thanks for the info

Charlie...
This is a great shot. The composition is just perfect, the overcast light screams of the Seward that I recall!

Hi Charlie,
Hope all well.
That's a fine pic and a wonderful pose.
Looks like that rock is more used to being used by the birds.
Interesting info too, never knew that, but then that's not saying much I suppose
Cheers,
Martin

Thanks guys and doll .
With the world's oceans warming, great white sharks might get to the far north, but currently the sea lion's main natural enemy is the orca. More specifically, the transient pods of orcas.
Added note: there are few sandy beaches along south central Alaska's coastline, so even the seals rest on rocks; they pick low, flat rocks though.

Nice Charlie. The critter doesn't seem to mind snoozing on leavings of nature's taggers.

Thanks Birdie, KCollett, Kmunroe and Chris.
Seagull droppings don't seem to bother this sea lion- thick fur, I guess.
At the beach long ago a seagull tagged me on the bare back. It burned so badly I had to run immediately into the ocean to wash it off. My back wasn't furry .
