I've had my D700 for about three weeks now, still don't own an FX standard zoom. I'm thinking I will take: Tamron 17-35mm Nik 35 f/2D Sigma 85 1.4 Nik 55 2.8 micro Do you think I will be missing a standard zoom? I'm thinking it will be mostly a landscape type trip. Thanks all for the advice - only thing I was lacking on the trip was copious amounts of lens cleaner. Dang humid down there, and that's coming from Houston! Oh yeah, and apparently I also needed a pair of pliers - discovered on night 1 that my SB-900 won't play nice with my D700. No TTL functionality and goes strobing at random... had never heard of this problem before now but I guess it is a bit common. Jul 23, 2012 at 09:21 PM

On the first trip, I took my D700 and 28-70 2.8.. it was convenient, but lugging that beast of a lens was NOT fun. The second time I went, I took the D700, 35/2, 85/1.4, and 180 2.8... it was inconvenient to change lenses but had SO MUCH FUN with the primes kit. It was a lot of fun trying to find "that" perfect framing and discovering hidden places along the way, as opposed to standing on one place, zooming, and being satisfied with what you get. Amen, I always have to chuckle when I see one of these "what should I bring" questions. Your shooting style is your shooting style, you should let it dictate your choice of lenses. Otherwise it is the tail wagging the dog, the only plausible exception being when you have severe weight or space limitations. If you don't have enough room for a dSLR and the above three lenses, then your problem is that you are bringing a dSLR, not the choice of lenses. If you have never shot SWA and now all of a sudden feel that because you are in Rome you should be shooting one you are setting yourself up for a disappointment and very likely lousy images. When I saw the above recommendation I could have sworn that the author shoots landscape, where the need for a mid-range zoom is near non-existent.
