p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon 24-70 or 70-200 which one first?

So im still amazed at what the Nikon D800 can do, even with somewhat cheap glass i currently have the tamron 28-75 f2.8 and 50mm f1.4g. Im debating at the moment buying the 24-70 or the 70-200 from nikon. They have a deal going on at the local shop and since i just bought a D800 i can get a bit of a price break on either. I like to shoot some landscapes, portraits, and youth sports. So either lens would be welcome just trying to decide which to go for first. Having the tamron 28-75 i have that range covered but not by the best of glass. Now lastly how does the Sigma 70-200 OS stack up for the serious enthusist? i plan to do some shoots for pay as well, but its mainly a hobby.

The 24-70 is my favorite. It's on my camera 75% of the time due to it's general usefulness . . . somewhat wide-angle, normal, and somewhat telephoto. It takes great portraits too, but the 70-200 is better for that. If you plan on shooting a lot of sports, then the 70-200 would be better.

most of your immediate needs are screaming long end first. Sports and portraits especially. 70-200 can also do landscape as well. did some landscape play around at the office team building excercise by the beach today with a 80-200 2.8 (midday sun not nice to my colors it looks like but I was jsut playing with my new mc-30 tbh...first cable release so getting a feel for it) . Some features of interest were out about an easy 10m of ocean from shoot spot to subject Not exactly zeiss 35/2 range for up more close up work.

if im not making my living with the stuff is the sigma passable?

Finding reviews for the siggy 24-70 is hard. Been eyeing the 24-70 and was thinking siggy as a cheaper option. But I can't find substantial work or reviews for it. Photozone.de has a review...but they hate every lens they try it seems lol. Google fu beyond some hits is not showing me enough to go on, wish you better luck.

Also for landscape be aware the siggy 24-70 is an 82mm filter. The lens will be cheaper but....a full battery of filters (ND's like say .6, .9 and a good CP) will eat up a chunk of those savings (unless kitted for 82mm already, then disregard). Even my 77mm's I use are not cheap. Desire to rekit and add another step down ring jsut not there either tbh. YMMV ofc.

I would say yes but i haven't used the sigma,

If you are considering a sigma, maybe you didn't need but rather wanted the d800? That is my case too. I do not make money from my camera and I wanted the D800 badly. If I were you I'd rather grow slowly on the lenses rather than pair it with a lens that might not give 100% to the sensor.

Cameras come and go. In 6 years your 800 will be super obsolete and there will be a new uber ultra Dxxx. But lenses stay. Lenses are for life. If you ask me, lenses are an investment for a hobbyist. Bodies aren't.

I would consider the sigma if it was optically superior. If not, why did you get the D800?

I could be wrong and the sigma might be optically superior. I'm not sure. Anyhow, the vr2 is the cream.

Buy AF-S 70-200/2.8G VR2 from Nikon. It is superior choice for sports photography where fast and accurate AF is everything. It gives approximately 135mm at the longer end when close-focusing which, I think, is enough for close-up portrait work.

I'd buy 70-200 because you already have 28-75 covered.

My thoughts as well. As far as the Sigma goes, I stopped buying them years ago. I just got tired of returning lenses for sharpness issues. It seems that copy to copy some Sigmas are sharper than others.

Unless the 28-85 isn't holding up to the D800, then I'd say 70-200 too.

Agreed. Get the Nikkor 70-200/2.8 VRII since you've got the 28-75 focal range covered for now. You will love this lens (as you should, for the $$$ you'll invest.)

I love mine. Here's random testing samples in my "D700 SandBox" area: http://public.fotki.com/mackdaddy/nikon-d700-sandbox/nikkor-70-200-f28-vrii/

Also, I will state I really, really like my Siggy 24-70/2.8 EX HSM as well. I was willing to give it a try over the Nikkor, as the $$$ was significantly less. I'm happy to say it does a fantastic job.

Sandbox area for the Sigma: http://public.fotki.com/mackdaddy/nikon-d700-sandbox/sigma-ex-24-70-f28/

A photo-shoot I did for one of my co-workers "last day" (retirement) small party at the local ice cream shop: http://public.fotki.com/mackdaddy/events/daves-ice-cream-social/

Enjoy!
Jim

while i love my 24-70 and it stays on my d3s almost all the time, the way you are describing things if i were in your shoes i'd go with the 70-200vr2 first, and save some more pennies for the 24-70. there are other choices in the short end as others have said, but the 70-200vr2 seems to be without a peer for a nikon mount.

I understand its the best of the best in that focal range just wandering if the sigma 70-200 is worth considering since im mainly a hobbyist and on occasion make some side money. Its $1100 in difference. I just havent ever played with the sigma 70-200 OS. I bought a used vr1 and liked the lens other than the fact the focus ring wouldnt budge so back it went.

I agree with pretty much what everyone's said so far- 70-200 seems to better fit the things you want to shoot.

I find myself taking a 50mm instead of the 24-70 mainly for size/weight considerations. The only limitation that I come across is indoor at close range- a 50mm just simply isn't wide enough. Since you already have a 50/1.4G, I would definitely recommend the 70-200. It's such a joy to use.

Definitely go with the 70-200 first. You already have the mid range covered, and while it isn't as nice as the Nikon 24-70, it at least works. You currently have no way of taking longer focal length pictures.

As far as which lens to get, I would not recommend the Sigma 70-200 OS lens. At the price ($1200 I think), a used Nikon 70-200 VR1 would be better choice. If you can afford the Nikon 70-200 VR2, that is clearly the best choice.

If you really are thinking of the sigma due to price, then go for a the Nikon VR1, very good lens...

I find the 24-70 of limited value for field size sports, other than team shots so the choice is obvious.

The AF-S Nikkor 70-200 VRII is an investment that will give good return over time.

I would rather have my AF-S Nikkor 28-300 than both Sigmas.
It is pretty much dedicated to my D800.
I use it for everything from Landscapes to Sports to Video.

The only time I would switch to my 28-70 or 70-200 is in extreme low light.
I only use the 14-24 to go wider.
