I spent about 30 minutes photographing this pair of yellow crowned night herons at the Oceanside Marine Study Area on Thursday. The one displaying is the male, all the other photos are of the female who was closer to me. I had to stop closing in on them as I was on an old board walk that had mostly been destroyed by last year’s hurricane and the part they were on was rotting out and blocked off. I’d left my extension tubes in the car so getting much closer would not have been any use. In any case I had a great time watching the pair. The male did everything he could do to get the females attention and she just kept cleaning herself.

I'm not sure anyone does fill-in flash better than you do Morris. Maybe to some who know more what to look for it is obvious but to my eye these are just perfect ambient light shots. Well done and a great series.

Question, do you just use the flash in manual or ittl?

Morris,, I don't post much but I'm alway lurking. You amaze me the work you do
with the D200. For those that are always looking to upgrade bodies should
take a look at your photos. Just goes to show it's the person behind the camera
not always the equipment. Great shots..

I miss the tips of those dagger-like beaks in a couple of these, Morris, but that takes nothing away from the great success of the series. As usual- incredibly fine work.

I use manual exposure and TTL-BL (Balanced light) flash with compensation as necessary.

Thank you Joe,

The D200 is a wonderful camera with its only fault high ISO noise. Add Noiseware Professional at about $50 and it is clean to ISO 800. Sometimes I wish I could go higher.
