I recognized several images on this facebook group that have come from various well known landscape photos. It might do the owner well to know that this sort of thing is frowned upon.

Here's the page. See if you recognize anything. I asked that they start attributing and linking and they pulled the comment.

Maybe if all of us who have a FB account reported the page it will get shut down. One of my photos is on there. I encourage all to report the page. I am going to do so.

I saw one of Michael Reichmann's photos was on there as well as several National Geographic images. I contacted Mr Reichmann as well as NG. We'll see. I can't report it, because I don't have any images that are being infringed, but I recognized a couple and TinEye turned up several more.

It's funny. I saw it through a share by Outdoor Research, the gear company, and noticed that there was absolutely NO attribution. I made OR aware of the fact and they agreed not to share any more Earthporn Pics. But in the time it took for them to agree the Likes on the Earthporn page had jumped from 150 to 400. It was a pretty heavy reminder of the impact even passive infringement can have.

I just reported it as spam. You have to go through hoops to report an IP infringement. Which is stupid. Easy to rip others off hard to them to report it!

Thanks Jim!

I put a post up on my FB page calling out my fans/followers to do the same!

That's a shame someone is stealing/taking credit for all those photos. I scrolled down quite a bit and there are some amazing shots on there of places I didn't know existed...truly spectacular! The title of the page is fitting. Reported as spam.

As always, yet another example of why people should be cautious when sharing photographs online. While it is impossible to completely protect images from misuse, there are a number of things that one can do to reduce the likelihood of gross infringement like that seen on this FB page:

Embed copyright and other data in EXIF

Embed some form of watermark within the image

Limit the size of shared photographs

Post at relatively low quality levels

Place a clear copyright indication within the borders of the photograph

Surround the photograph with a border that includes branding information

I read his "about me", and he states that none of the photos belong to him, and that the photos have been granted request to be used/reblogged and the photos had been sourced correctly.. \\hmm

I just saw that. Here was my response.

Nice gesture, but it doesn't count if the people you took them from were using them without permission in the first place. Seriously, I appreciate your desire to share cool images, but there is a right and wrong way to do it. You say that all copyright belongs to respective owners, but without attribution.

This wasnt there earlier. He posted that in a feeble attempt try and cover his ass but he has not gotten permission. I'd put $1000 on it. I would never give permission with no credit back to me.

Not mine. I don't post meaningful images openly on the web.

EBH, Glad you have that option. I originally posted this in Landscape where a lot of shooters only have the choice to sell prints, and need an online presence. Some of the photographers who have their work appropriated include National Geographic Photogs, Marc Adamus, Michael Reichmann, Nick Cobbing and others. All of whom, I'm sure are aware of the issue of posting and having their work online. And posts like mine are the there to help mitigate the risk.
