Great lens but I could find no practical reason to keep it over the 50 1.4.

Has anyone used it with an older body W/O micro adjustment? I have wanted to rent one, but with a 1Ds11 I am not sure it would be a good idea.

Robert, 50L & 85L have been glued to my couple 1ds2. They work together very well.

I bought the 50 1.2L in early 2008 and used it with my 5D successfully. The outer points were iffy but the center point was fine. Oddly, although the 5D2 supposedly has the same AF array as the 5D, the lens focused faster and was more surefooted on the 5D2. Even the outer points were good in reasonable (but not low) light. No MA needed for either camera.

Taken on ancient 5D:

After reading many discussions on the good…the bad…and the ugly of the Canon 50 f/1.2L over several years now, I and my IPA have come to the conclusion that the main problem, except in a normal, expected (maybe .01 %) rate of failure, just my number,…which would show on a forum dedicated to photography at a much, much higher rate…is due to the most part…

Operator Error…Think I’ll get one for use on a Full Frame…refurbished by Canon of course...

Haha. Nice. Love my 50. Trinity = 24tse2, 50L, 85L2. Ah bliss!!

Some of my shots above are on the 1Ds2 -- including the wedding shot further up the thread.

The Canon 50mm 1.2 is a must have, very special lens. So far I find no issues with the 5DIII. Hope that continues....

I bought and sold the 50 1.2 and bought it again ,I think it is a fantastic lens and I own the 85L as well....the pictures just have a special look to them and I havent had any issues with the AF but I do tend to use it in low light situations where i take advantage of the speed of the lens

I owned a very early model 50/1.2 and I can tell you it did have some issues ( which have been documented ad-nauseam). I don't think it was operator error as I have since used a later model and found none of backfocus problems I encountered in the earlier model. Either way lets drink to the 50 f/1.2.

Can't go wrong with the 50L, it has replaced my 24-105L as a walk around lens.

I guess I'm one of those unlucky people. I have the 35/1.4 and 85/1.2 along with a 5DIII, and I shoot them wide open a large percentage of the time, so I know how to focus with narrow DOF.

I tried two copies of the 50/1.2 and the amount of keepers was unacceptably low vs. my 50/1.4 and the two L primes. I did prefer the look of the 50/1.2 to the 50/1.4, so I really wanted it to work.

I finally gave up, but often think about trying again. I absolutely love my 85/1.2 and it's inspiring me to reconsider the 50/1.2 (especially because that's a more useful focal length for me most of the time).

Try again, nothing like 85L and 50L combo. I am a lucky one...trying both UX/UW and both are good, sold UX and keep UW one.

Have a 50L but its use stymies me. Sometimes sharp, other times not. I am experimenting with it and with a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG. Would really like to understand better how I should be using. Love the pictures people show here and would be real happy if I could achieve similar results. My 35L and 85L II both give me great images and behave as I expect so I hope I can get to the same place with the 50L.

I found 50L works well when your MA is within +/- 3. Even though no AF system has 100% accuracy rate while dealing with 0.23m dof. Get focussing screen to verify your final focal plan after AFed. You might need a little tap to correct if it was a bit off.
