I hear ya - Summers are SO NICE here in the mid-west (compared to the Gulf Coast/south, where I've lived/worked most of my life) that I really hate our winters -- and they're not super-bad either...it's just the cold/chills lasts too long for my liking! About 5 months or so.

Loving our weather now - Hoping you get some relief!

Nice pair of images - I must say, that dog is simultaneously really pretty and really scary at the same time

Thanks! Yeah, his stare is pretty intense and if I didn't know him, I wouldn't even go near him. But, he's a pretty sweet dog.

E-M5 II with 12-40, from 64MP RAW. (Gives tons of detail even after massive keystone correction)

Looking for a travel cam. The EM5 II seems to fit the bill. Do I really need anything other than the 12-40?

Seems like that or a 35 and 45 could go a long way.

That pair is quite potent, I will say. Maybe pair it with the new tiny Panasonic 35-100/4-5.6, which is incredibly small.

Ditto - I love the person (child?) in the scene - I would have never gotten the sense of scale I did without him/her!

Three from yesterday's walk, all with Noct 42.5. Damn I love this lens My only wish is that it had a bit more vignetting wide open, so I wouldn't have to add in post

EM5 (1 or 2) and 12-40 would be fine. If you want longer, try any of the other tele zooms. The only zoom that is "large" by m43 standards is the 40-150 Pro (or the older 43 stuff, but I'm not counting that) or maybe the 100-300 Panasonic, simply because it's a fairly long focal lengthed zoom.

Even the 35-100/2.8 is pretty darn small - fits great in my messenger bag (Retro 5, which is a small bag)

Retro 5 is a big bag! I can carry a full size DSLR with two primes in that.

Mirrorless mover 5 is a small bag!

The retro 5 is not a big bag. Yeah, you can fit a small DSLR with two small primes, but try fitting a 24-70/2.8 in there on a body with anything else.

One the other hand, it can be used to carry an entire m4/3 kit. I use one for my m4/3 stuff. Right now I carry my E-M5 with 14-42, 14/2.5, 60/2.8 macro and 75-300, plus a flashgun in the pocket.

When I used it as my primary I'd have the 7-14, 25/1.4, 75/1.8 and 35-100/2.8 in there and had no issues.

That said, I used to carry a tiny bag that could fit the E-M5 with 12/2, 25/1.4 and 45/1.8.

So if I want a tiny bag. Any suggestions? I'd be happy carrying EM5 II + 2 small primes or 12-40.

Also if one is starting from scratch would you go 12-40 or 17 + 45

Personally I'd go with the 12-40, since it is an excellent lens in its own right and covers a great range (plus weather sealed). It's not as small as many m43 primes, though. Really depends on how you use your system. If you want jacket pocketability, use the 14/20mm pancakes. Crazy fast? Noct or the Voigtlander primes. Etc etc.

That's the beauty of m43 - you can go for outright performance at the expense of some bulk, or you can keep it tiny and give up a little performance or convenience. I am just as happy carrying my naked EM5 with one pancake in my pocket and another mounted as I am carrying the entire setup in my retro 5.

Absolutely agree with this statement. I opted for the more bulky option i.e. E-M1 + Nocticron + PRO lenses … but it's still significantly smaller and lighter than the equivalent DSLR or FF Sony. The 42.5/1.2, 12-40/2.8, 40-150/2.8, 7-14/2.8 and 300/4 are all less than half the size and weight of the Canon or Nikon equivalent.
