I went camping in East Hampton LI NY and here are some from my EM-10 and the new Sigma 19mm Art.
First time taking serious photos with that combo and I am impressed. That lens is sharp.

This is most likely going to be a replacement of the E-M1 with improved focus tracking speed and accuracy:

You think?
I don't, really. I guess it's time for the EM-5 replacement, instead.

We will see

Sure hope not. I thought the E-M10 replaced the E-M5. It's quite silly to have 3 different models in the OM-D series. Besides, the E-M1 needs to be upgraded to compete against the GH-4, Fuji X-T1 and Sony A6000.

What's the point of introducing the 300/4 lens (which is mostly a birding lens) if there is no chance of tracking birds in flight?

Well, there's a lot of time since there... the 300 is planned for 2015 (not even early), and at that time the EM1 will be old enough for retirement... but in september the EM1 would have been on the market only 10 months... waay too early, IMO

The E-M1 was officially announced on September 10, 2013 (so it will be exactly a year if they announced it in Photokina this year) and they started shipping the camera in mid October.

B&H has already listed the Olympus PRO 300/4 lens on their website although they have no info on the price or release date yet:

It would seem a bit too early to release a replacement for the Em-1 but who knows, perhaps an Em-1s (or whatever) in order to better compete with the GH4 would be my guess in such a case. Which would basically mean an Em-1 with good video functions.

I'm not sure what it needs to compete with the XT-1 one more though, they both seem pretty level on paper, and in the reviews. With responsiveness going to the EM-1 and picture quality going to the XT-1.

I do agree that it is silly to have three cameras in the OM-D line, specially since they almost share the same picture quality and the EM-5 and EM-10 are very similar.

Then again, there would be no real meaning in releasing an EM-5 upgrade either as that would probably bring it too close to the EM-1 specs.

Personally, I do hope for an upgraded Em-1 of course as I am planning on getting one early next year.

Who knows, only Olympus I guess, we'll have to wait and see.

The GH-4 was out 17 months after the GH-3. There is a lot of buzz and interest on the X-T1, GH-4 and A6000 recently. Olympus is probably thinking it will be a smart move to release their flagship camera a few months earlier. It's unlikely that it will have 4K video but improving on the focus tracking in order to compete with the GH-4 and X-T1 shouldn't be too hard for them to do, and they can probably improve on the DR and IQ to compete with the X-T1. One year is enough time for them to make and incorporate these important changes.

True Bobby but will those changes alone warrant and upgrade? Olympus has previously said they will start developing the video part more which would seem wise considering the GH4. While I don't expect it to be able to compete with the GH4 it might still have some added video features (hopefully).

I'm still skeptical that it is an Em-1 update but I am hoping for it.

Depends on the type of photography you do, I guess. If you shoot sports or wildlife, AF tracking speed and accuracy is crucial.

The folks at the m43 forum seem to think that this is the next iteration of the E-M5. I personally think the E-M5 should be retired or discontinued.

Bobby, the E-M5 is still my working system camera, although my RX1 and RX100 between them get more use lately. I'm not unhappy with the E-M5, but if they were to do a cleanup of some of its quirks and update it with the latest bells 'n whistles - without making it larger or heavier - I might be interested. However, these are tough times in the camera business, and I'm hoping that Olympus will surprise all of us with something new and exciting.

The way I see it, the biggest competitor/threat is not the GH4 or XT-1 but the A6000. The 24MP APS-C sensor is clearly superior to the E-M1 and the AF tracking speed and accuracy is currently the best of any mirrorless camera. The main advantage of the E-M1 is certainly not the size but IBIS and the line of m43 lenses.
