Thanks Steve and yes, only glue (so far) - I might have to reinforce the side rails, as they're only sitting in a groove and I have to attach handles somehow (no confidence in a long grain to end grain glue up).
As for the variations on the joinery, that's called me "winging it" I was following an actual plan, then veered off and started doing my own thing.
I need practice on my joinery, but this was my first project really using it, so I'm sure I'll get better. I will say, even with sharp chisels, cutting through red oak is like attacking steel with a wet noodle.
