p.1 #1 · Blind Prickly Pear Cactus Flower

I thought I had run out of new flowers to shoot a long while ago but yesterday I was walking on the street and saw this cactus flower that I have never shot before. I pulled out my trusty pocket knife and cut off the entire "leaf" with the flower on it. Unfortunately, this is one of those cacti with teensy little spines that you can't see until you feel them stuck in your skin. Anyway, after I managed to get al of them out. I shot this. I hope you llke it!

Wonderfully done! I love the conversion but you are making me want to see it in color. What lens?

Looks like Blind Prickly Pear cactus... so called because of the way those tiny little spines that you didn't see will blind cattle, I am told. I like the dimensionality given by the shades of gray around the right hand side of the blossom.

Thanks so much for the kind comment. I'm so glad you like it! Canon EF 85 f 1.8 lens with an extension tube so I could get in closer.

All the best,

Endre

Here is the color version:

That's some nice cactus flower you found there, Endre.
I prefer the B&W version. I like the way you light the whole flower.

Think I refer the color version but both as always are stunning, especially fond of the inclusion of the leaf, makes the shot for me.

Thanks, Tom! I'm so happy you like it.

It amazes me, too. All I do is position them in the light and click the shutter.

All best wishes,

Endre

Thanks, Patsy, my dar friend! It's been awhile since I shot a new flower so I'm glad it worked out. As you know, I always try to include the leaves whenever I can - especially when they are interesting, like with this cactus.

Warm regards,

Endre

Glad to see you are still finding new blooms to shoot.
Please, wear gloves for picking cactus flowers though.

Thanks a lot, John! I'm glad you like it.

Normally, I would have only handled it with gloves, but the places where the spines should be are well defined and I thought I was only holding it there. Sadly, the spines seem to be in other places, as well. Next time, it's gloves for sure!

All the best,

Endre

Excellent. I like the B&W version. I like the very dark background. Very nice !

I've had my share of stickers from these. When I was very young, I kicked one, while in flip-flops (it was in an unfriendly neighbor's yard). So I learned all about these at a very young age.

Thanks for sharing this shot !

Eric

Thanks, Eric. I am delighted you like it and I appreciate your kind comments.

Yeah, I've been stuck by these before - but a long time ago. I guess one has to relearn things like that periodically.

All the best,

Endre

Another expertly lit shot Endre! If I'm being totally honest, the stem isn't working for me on this one. Something about it's position in relation to the flower? I don't know and there's probably nothing you could have done because they grow the way they grow....I guess in a way I would want you to break the rule of the connection and let it float in negative space....

Cheers!

Greg
