Nice pics Edd. Just saw these in Sports Corner, the tip over was pretty nuts!
Thanks...I don't think anyone cares about multi-million dollar boats over there (Sports) unless it has a "babe" or two draped across it .
It was crazy, and I did see it right in front of me. Their boat ended up floating down to the Newport bridge, where it was "righted", and then sailed back into harbor for a +200,000 USD repair.
Could you elaborate a little bit on the merits of the 180L as a telephoto lens (as used in your first pics). I sold my 100 non-IS macro a few years ago, and was thinking of replacing my 70-200 f/4 with the 180mm lens to do double duty (macro and telephoto).

That's a wonderful little garden spot you have there, whereabouts in NV are you? Seems like it's a little difficult to maintain yards pretty much anywhere over there, too much sand?
hehe, thanks, that photo was taken on a recent trip to San Francisco.
Now that Edd (Roboticspro) has found the thread and showered upon us those incredible sailboat images, we are gathering old "members", and happy to see fine contributions from new "members".
Glad to see the old contributors posting again....Psych, Cputeq, Eskimo and Robert (aka Burningheart), and more new ones.
Couldn't make the terns fly against some verdant background, thus the dark lake had to do the job this evening.
1DsMkII + 300 f/2.8 IS MkI.
300mm FL is normally less than ideal for this kind of shots, however, fortunately 1DsMkII files allow a fair degree of crop-enlargements. Generally that is a pretty powerful BIF combo, although the camera frame rate and buffer size leaves a bit to be desired.
I might post a few behavioral shots tomorrow if I get around to it....some sort of bird playing catch with a feather over water. They are huge crops though....5d2 with 70-200 is even less of a birding setup than the 300 combo
Peter, I just got back from an 8000 mile road trip around the US. I took 65,000 shots for a timelapse and have hundreds of pictures I'm going through from national parks and the like.

Jason, I like the IQ and bokeh which 180L gives because it is similar to the Pipe......darker and with certain colour and boundary depth. The lens is also very sharp at all focusing distances.
Furthermore, its shape/heft, metal barrel and MF ring (wide and smother than in supertelephoto lenses) I find very agreeable. As a bonus, there is no problem with MFD for close up shots, or macro if you wish.
The only limitation is in somewhat sluggish AF drive, but I've shot medium difficulty BIF with it without major problems.
The 200mm f/2.8 prime is faster and lighter, but it in my eyes it doesn't quite have the same quality as 180L.
