I need to carry on a Nikon 500mm f/4 lens as well as another bag of camera gear. I have the additional gear covered, but need some help in figuring how to get this big A@# lens on board with me. Anyone have a solution that they find convenient?
Mountain Hardwear backpack - "Splitter" - you can easily fit a 500mm F4 with body attached...I fit a Canon 500 F4; and the 800mm F5.6 (not at same time obviously). The pack is less than $100 and made to carry on a trail...
Look into the Aquatech soft lens hood if you need to cut down on space in the backpack. They make one for the Nikon 500 F4 but it is about $170...
Some folks like the Kiboko backpack by Gura Gear - I have it...it is OK but expensive. It is lightweight though...pack-cloth is durable and can take a beating too.
Yes look for a backpack that is designed for trekking/hiking etc. IMO the photo backpacks are overpriced and not designed for walking a reasonable distance. Now if you don't plan to walk/hike at all in Alaska, then you have more choices....
