A lot big name portrait/wedding/commercial photographers have been making their own "how to" VHS and DVDs since the 80s. Before that other on-the-job photo lessons were available on slide film, and of course always in book form. Monte Zucker and Dean Collins were two of the more notable, instructional photographers who showed you how they worked while demonstrating the posing, lighting, camera lens/position, etc. So it's not peculiar; it's just another learning tool that has been available for a long time.
