p.1 #1 · Anyone use a 5DM3 with at TC to AF at F8?

If you followed those acronyms you understand the scenario.
I presently have 5DMkII & 1DsMkII.
I have been hanging on the 1D series because I can use my 400/5/6 with a TC and get good AF, sharp images.

But the temptation to consolidate things has me looking at a 5DMk3 to replace both functionally.
I don't really need to bodies & don't do sports.
I occasionally do wildlife & some events.

I have heard folks talk about taping pins in the past
But I want a current experience with a 5DMk3, with a TC and the AF performance at f8

Too bad Magic Lantern hasn't offered a firmware package to make this a menu selection.
Why Canon limits this even now on the 1DX without at least the option is mystifying.....

Yes I think someone, maybe at DPR, had done tests with F8 AF. Try a search there, or even here, or maybe POTN...one of those three

[There are some 1.4x's that don't require taping. The downside is that they don't report the correct fstop in the exif.]

But in any event, I have used tamron 1.4x on 100-400L with 5diii (starts at f8 with 1.4x) and it works well. Better than the 7d in similar circumstances which also focuses with the same 1.4x on it.

Thanks for the info. I have Kenko ProTCs that I have been very satisfied with results.
Hoping to try them on a friends 5DMkIII soon.
So guess my next question for folks might be if the Kenko needs pins taped....

My understanding is that the kenko "pros" require taping. But the non "pros" don't.

If they report the fstop correctly they need taping.

I have tried my tamron 1.4 with canon 1.4xii on my 500f4 and it focuses fine. I am not vouching for quality. Here is a quick shot in low light. Uncropped and focussed on the middle flower. Focus happend fast despite the gloomy sky at 9PM. Unfortunately at this hour it was iso 6400 and 1/320s.

1.4x Tamron x 1.4x Canon III & 5d3 centre focussed
Canon EOS 5D Mark III 700 mm f/5.6 1/320 sec 6400 ISO +0.3 EV

I taped my Canon 1.4III, attached to 100-400L and it does AF on 5d3. Performance is crappy, you need to press focus button couple of times until it will finally focus. I will probably crop my shots with better results.

LV can focus at F8.0 without taping the pin but it is slow to accquire lock. I tested it on 400 F5.6L+1.4 III. YMMV

I tried taping the pins on mine, and it was hit and miss, mostly miss. It was a waste of time. Iy might AF fine on some lenses in very good light, but at best it will be slow, and will likely hunt a lot. I also found that it did not focus accurately with some lenses.

Is this your own experience on a 5D Mark III? Or on a different camera, like the 5D Mark II?

I found a 1.4X non-reporting TC's that auto-focus with 5D III nicely at F8 (no taping of pins)
works for BIF as focus is very usable.

Tamron-F AF 1.4x teleconverter (non-reporting)

No mystery at all; a Canon decision to widen the spacing of the AF sensors in the viewfinder, which helps a large number of users, while hurting a specialized few:
